Harry Hoffman, born in Cressona, Pennsylvania, studied in New York City and Paris before going to Old Lyme in 1902 and associating with other artists working there during the summer months. He returned to Old Lyme over the next few summers, then moved there permanently in 1910, although continuing to spend winters in a New York City apartment for the next two decades. Hoffman took strong interest in Old Lyme activities, including the Lyme Art Association and later the Florence Griswold Association. In addition, he enjoyed any opportunity to perform on stage, becoming a regular actor with the local theater group and making memorable appearances at the annual Old Lyme Street Fair.
Hoffman later gained recognition for his numerous watercolor sketches of underwater life, from which he produced several hundred oil paintings. He also pursued his undersea interest on research trips to Bermuda, British Guiana (now Guyana), and the Galapagos Islands. In the early 1930s, Hoffman’s wife, Beatrice Hoffman, who had pursued an interest in creating tapestries based on her husband’s designs, was instrumental in the founding of the Old Lyme Guild of Artists and Craftsmen.

Harry Leslie Hoffman
Harry Leslie Hoffman was born in Cressona, a small community in Pennsylvania's Schuylkill Valley. His mother was an amateur artist who encouraged her son to pursue a career in the arts. In 1893, Hoffman entered the School of Art at Yale University and studied with John Ferguson Weir, the son of Robert Walter Weir. After graduation in 1897, Hoffman moved to New York to continue his studies at the Art Students League. He also traveled to Paris and took classes at the Académie Julien. In the summer of 1902, Hoffman attended the Lyme Summer School of Art, in the town of Old Lyme on the Connecticut coast. The school was headed by Frank Vincent Dumond and was located in a boarding house owned by Florence Griswold. The school eventually grew into an artists' colony and a center for American Impressionism. When Hoffman first arrived as a student, he was not permitted to stay in the house which was designated for the professional artists only. However, his outgoing personality soon won him many friends at the colony. In 1905, Hoffman settled in Old Lyme and worked as a full member of the artist colony. He was particularly influenced by Willard Leroy Metcalf, an Impressionist also working in Old Lyme. Fellow artists later fondly recalled Hoffman's antics at the Griswold house, which included playing the flute and banjo, tap-dancing, singing humorous songs, and performing magic tricks. In 1910 Hoffman married another Old Lyme artist named Beatrice Pope, and the couple had one child in 1921. Hoffman and his wife often escaped New England during the harsh winter months. In the winters of 1914 and 1915 he traveled to Savannah, Georgia with fellow Old Lyme artist William Chadwick. Hoffman depicted urban genre scenes around the city and was inspired by the soft hazy light created by the tropical climate. Hoffman's Savannah paintings feature loose, Impressionistic brushwork and vibrant, saturated colors. In 1916, he visited the Bahamas and became interested in seascapes and underwater scenes. During the early twenties, Hoffman accompanied renowned naturalist William Beebe as a staff artist on expeditions to the Galapagos Islands, British Guiana, and Bermuda. Throughout his career, Hoffman was a member of numerous art associations and clubs including the Salmagundi Club, the National Arts Club, the New York Watercolor Club, and he was elected as an associate member of the National Academy of Design in 1930. He was awarded a gold medal at the Panama Pacific Exposition in 1915 and won the Eaton Prize, bestowed by the Lyme Art Association in 1924. His work is now located in private and permanent collections throughout the United States.

- Swing,By Ray DonarskiLocated in Concord, MARAY DONARSKI (1935-1996) Swing, 1966 Oil on canvas 17 ½ x 17 ½ inches Signed, dated and inscribed verso: ‘Swing’ / Ray Donarski / 2/66 / 17 ½ x 17 ½ / For Mr. & Mrs. Passerman / New York 1966 Original frame Ray Donarski was one of a group of artists in New York known as the Bowery Boys during the early sixties. The group included Eva Hesse, Robert Mangold, Jack Youngerman, and Robert Rauschenberg among others. He is mentioned in several of art critic Lucy Lippard's articles on New York conceptual artists and Bowery Boy artists of that period. Donarski was a close friend of artist James Rosenquist. They had studied together at the Art Students League in New York. In January of 1962 Donarski helped Rosenquist set up his first solo exhibition at the Green Gallery in New York. In his book, Painting Below Zero: Notes on a Life in Art, Rosenquist recalls sitting on the floor with Donarski before opening night wondering if anyone would show up. The show sold out before it opened. When Rosenquist was broke and homeless in 1955 his friend Donarski told him he knew of a great job as a chauffeur and bartender for some very wealthy people. They went up to see them and split the job. Rosenquist took it for a year, and after a year, he gave it to Donarski. In an interview with Rosenquist he said “I lived in the lap of luxury with very little money, and was a chauffeur bopping around in a ’56 Lincoln town car and a ’56 Lincoln convertible with big fins on the car (laughs), great big fins. I did that for a year and then transferred into the International Sign Painters.” Donarski married Mary Lou Storm and had two children. He became known as the “American in Luxembourg”, dividing his time between New York and summers in Luxembourg, where he was represented by Galerie Paul Bruck and Galerie Horn. He also exhibited at the Westport Gallery...Category
