Nu (Standing Female Nude) Red chalk on wove paper, c. 1925 Signed lower right: C Despaiu (see photo) Sheet size (folded format): 12 1/8 x 8 5/16 inches Condition: Very good Sheet folded in 1/2 prior to creation of this drawing on 1/2 of the sheet Note: Despiau was a highly regarded sculptor. In his youth, he worked in the studio of Auguste Rodin, who greatly influenced his mature style. His major focus was portraying the female nude figure. His drawings have a highly developed style that depicts the figure gracefully without excessive detail. A similar drawing is in the collection of the Albright Knox Museum. A bronze entitled “Assia, sans bras” is a similar pose and appears to be the same model.
