Alan Durman
Portrait of a Young Girl, Mid-20th Century Pastel Drawing, Signed

About the Item

Pastel on paper, signed bottom right Image size: 12 x 14 1/2 inches (30.5 x 36.75 cm) Contemporary style hand made frame This is a touching drawing of a young girl who is seen smiling and looking directly out at the viewer. The girl's bright young face and rosy cheeks display her youthful vigour, and there is a sense of paternal adoration in the way she is so closely observed. Alan Durman Durman was a verstile artist and photographer, born in Weymouth, Dorset, who trained there with a photographer, then moved to London, where he made window displays. He next worked as an artist and photographer with Imperial Tobacco Company, then with the printer Mardon, Son and Hall, and in World War II was commissioned in the Royal Army Service Corps. Durman moved to Bristol about 1950. He was elected an artist member of Bristol Savages in 1946, was made its president in 1952 and exhibited prolifically, 1946–63, portraits and landscapes, and with RWA occasionally, 1934–49. The Savages held work by, and a caricature of, Durman, who was remembered as “small in stature with a twinkle in his eye … When he joined the club he was clean shaven, but in the late 1950s he grew a moustache and beard". He designed several posters for British Railways, most of which had a holiday theme. Many of his posters contained bathing beauties images. He also painted murals, including for Saltford Community Hall, Cabot Grill, and Berkeley Cafe. He exhibited on many occasions at the Royal West of England Academy. Examples of his work are held in the collections of Hampshire County Council, the National Railway Museum, and the Victoria Art Gallery, Bath.
