Feng Biddle
Sunflower and Hydrangea on Blue Table

2017

About the Item

Artist Comments
Spring is coming to Chicago, and everything is green in a hurry. I went to Trader Joe's, and picked up this small floral arrangement, and decided to paint an expression of my spring feeling. This is an original pastel painting on sanded paper and will need a frame for display.

About the Artist
Feng Biddle didn’t have much exposure to art as a child growing up in China in the aftermath of the Cultural Revolution. It wasn’t until after she immigrated to the U.S. and stumbled upon an artist demonstrating how to use oil pastels that she realized her passion. Feng starts each piece by sketching on paper with charcoal, later transferring the outline to canvas like a stencil. When painting still lifes, she always outlines the vase first and lets the rest of the image develop organically around it. Feng works slowly and deliberately in her studio made of glass walls, reflecting on each piece until it guides her what to do next. When she’s not making art, Feng works as a data architect. “In a way, this is similar to what I do with my art, where I am creating structures for form and color. In another way, however, it is the opposite, as building data structures is almost entirely a logical, left brain activity, whereas my art work is an emotional, right brain effort. I guess you could say that these are the complementary yin and yang that make me whole.”

  • Bird Bath
    By Dwight Smith

    Artist Comments
This is a humorous original still life watercolor painted in the realist tradition. The rubber duck was a gift from my wife and the porcelain bowl was my mom's that she used many years ago to give me and my brother baths. The pedestal is yard furniture. I enjoy making people smile with my art.

    About the Artist
Dwight Smith depicts commonplace objects with a sense of playfulness and humor. His watercolor still life paintings appear conventional in their soft colors and composed compositions, but upon further observation the juxtaposition of unrelated items make for delightfully surprising combinations and comparisons. This transformation of the everyday, and strong graphic style, lend the work a pop feel. However, pop art is generally cool and ironic. Instead, there is a familiar and comforting sense of kitsch and Americana in Dwight’s subjects. In a similar fashion to the work of American artist Wayne Thiebaud, Dwight paints food and sweets of the American appetite. Doughnuts, hotdogs, and lollipops are captured in all of their potent delight. He plays with scale and composition to bring out a sense of the absurd, but ultimately his goal is to make the viewer smile.
