Alvin C. Hollingsworth
Slate Stone Collage Painting - African American Artist

1955 - 1963

About the Item

African American Artist Alvin Hollingsworth creates a mixed-media abstract painting/collage that abounds with inventiveness and creativity. Large sections of the work are composed of thin pieces of slate that are glued onto a wood panel support. Flat rocks are added and positioned on the iron-red ground. Found elements such as a bottle cap, typographer's numbers, and remnants of the white press type are also included. it's 1971 and the artist is doing a semi-type painting - a theme today's contemporary artists are running with. Finally, Hollingsworth etches a portrait of a man in a thin line on one of the slates. Guggenheim 1971 and his name are also inscribed into the rock. The work takes on a different character as the light changes and reflects off the stones and due to it's 3 dimensional quality the work is as much an object as an image.. Exhibited: New York, Lee Nordness Galleries, circa the 1960s. Lee Nordness Galleries label on verso. PROVENANCE Gifted by the artist to the current owner, a long-term family friend of Hollingsworth
