About the Item
This series of new work is Elizabeth Gregory Gruen’s exploration of the human psyche during this challenging era where humanity has been thrust into reckoning with its soul.
The serene silence composed of color and surface providing the expansiveness of dreamlike peace using free flowing cutting that is both elemental and spontaneous.Exploring the psychic reality of the definite and indefinite balanced in a luminous gradation of color. Culminating in an ever-changing landscape of emotional challenges and calm.
Cut Work is the perfection derived from the imperfection of building multiple free hand scalpel cut lines layered inward to look in at the complexity of the human condition. Using her Cut Work technique coupled with the hand made silkscreened paper by Gary Lichtenstein create a unified dialogue.

Elizabeth Gregory-Gruen
Elizabeth Gregory-Gruen grew up in Chicago. There, the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright inspired her to experiment with 3-dimensional design using natural light and shadow. Elizabeth came to New York City in 1985 to study Fashion Design at Parsons School of Design. After graduating in 1989, she went on to work at top design houses. Her work has appeared in major fashion magazine editorials including Vogue, Harper's Bazaar and InStyle. She currently resides in New York City with her husband Bob Gruen. CUT WORK Cut Work is an evolving examination of emotion, using original imagery created in a free, hand cut action technique employing a surgeon's scalpel. A clear mind and a steady hand guide Elizabeth Gregory-Gruen in her exploration into shadow and light. Each image is initiated in the top layer of paper. An adhesive is added and another layer of paper; this layer is cut and the process continues, until a total reverse relief is created. The organic images, defined in the numerous layers of paper, capture light and create shadows changing with each moment.

- Cutwork: 'Red & White Circle - In'By Elizabeth Gregory-GruenLocated in New York, NYCutwork is made of 2 ply museum board layered with acrylic ink silkscreen color blend. Though seemingly perfect and symmetrical at first glance, the original images are cut with no guide, defined by the authentic energy of the free hand cutting. The reverse-relief effect is achieved by first cutting what will become the top layer of paper, with each subsequent sheet layered and cut individually. About her process, Gregory-Gruen says, “It is visceral. A meditation. Imperfection is perfection.” CUT WORK” is an evolving examination of emotion experienced through the inspired meeting of blade and paper. Beginning with the featureless plane of a blank paper...Category
