Yeffe Kimball
Abstract

1960

About the Item

A textured "Cosmic Abstraction " that we attributed to Yeffe Kimball. While the work is unsigned the technique used with the blistering paint closely resembles her work. A dynamic mid-century work with great movement and use of color and texture. Yeffe Kimball came to New York City from Oklahoma to study at the Art Students League, where she studied 1935-39, with field trips to France and Italy. She also studied with Fernand Leger in NYC from 1940-1941. In 1948, she married Harvey Slatin, also of New York, and they lived for many years at 11 Bank Street in Greenwich Village. Her husband had been given a sample of the "fused earth" from the first atomic explosion, and much of Kimball's work after her marriage drew from this concept; her work of the 1950s is called her "fused-earth" period. By the early 1960s, Kimball had entered into her space concept period, with paintings of burning planets, spewing atmospheric gases, and flashing comets. From 1942 to 1965, Kimball exhibited in more than 100 shows at art galleries and museums. Her first major appearance was at the National Academy of Arts in 1942. In 1945, she was in the Armory's Critic's Choice show, and in the same year her work was shown at the Whitney. Her work was also shown at the Carnegie Institute that year, as well as at museums in Georgia and the Carolinas. In 1946 she had her first solo show, at the Rehn Gallery in NYC; by 1987 she had had more than 55 solo exhibitions, which must be a record for any American artist. Among her other exhibitions are the Crocker Art Gallery in Sacramento in 1947; the Dayton Art Institute in 1958; the Denver Art Museum in 1947; Galeries Giroux in Brussels, Belgium, in 1948; Delgado Museum of Art in New Orleans in 1947; JFK Intl Airport in 1964; Museum of New Mexico in Santa Fe in 1948 and in 1957; Nova Gallery in Boston, 1961 and 1962; Portland Art Museum in Oregon in 1949; Santa Barbara Museum of Art in 1950; Tirca Kavlis Gallery in Provincetown annually from 1959 to 1965; University of New Mexico in 1948 and 1957; University of Virginia Museum of Fine Art in 1963; and four major exhibitions at the Philbrook Museum of Art in Tulsa, which gave her a restrospective that toured the nation in 1966-1967. Kimball's work is included in the collections of the following museums: Baltimore Museum of Art; Boston Museum of Fine Art; Cincinnati Art Museum; Dayton Art Institute; Chrysler Art Museum; Mattatuck Museum; Norfolk Museum of Arts and Sciences; Philbrook Museum, Tulsa; Portland Art Museum, Portland, Oregon (this piece is called "Fawn and Spirits," and combines modernist and Native American motifs); Wadsworth Atheneum, Hartford; Washington & Lee University, Virginia.

Provenance: Barry Friedman Gallery, Modernism Fine Arts, New York. Estate Stamped. Thilo Maatsch (1900-1983) Thilo Maatsch has an epiphany at age 16 when, having been taken to Berlin’s prestigious Avant Garde art gallery Der Sturm, he’s mesmerized by the work of Franz Marc, and determines to be an artist. Eleven years later, he’ll one day recall with pride, his work exhibits there. Born and raised in 1900 Braunschweig, Germany, Maatsch by age 18 forms "Gesellschaft der Freunde junger Kunst" (Society of Friends of New Art) with Rudolf Jahns and Johannes Molzahn. Its members include soon-to-be-famous Lyonel Feininger, Paul Klee and Wassily Kandinsky, who promotes Maatsch and becomes something of a father figure. Introductions to collector Otto Ralfs in Braunschweig and the esteemed painter Heinrich Vogeler in Worpswede over the next two years influence his expanding body of work. By 1922 Maatsch has a growing family to support, and as his art fails to provide this he begins training to be a teacher, a vocation he’ll fall back on repeatedly throughout his life. His first assignment is that of primary school teaching in Holzminden. 1924 sees Ralfs purchasing a Maatsch work and hanging it alongside the now well-known names of Mondrian, Kandinsky and Klee. The following year Ralfs launches an entire exhibition of the Society of Friends of New Art. Because of his day job, Maatsch is unable to realize his wish to study at the Bauhaus, the avant garde epicenter in Weimar and later, Dessau. But thanks to Kandinsky, Klee and Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, he’s allowed to occupy their studios and study with them during school holidays. His befriending of Kurt Schwitters during this time explains why Maatsch is often included in the so-called Schwitters Group. In 1925 he joins the Novembergruppe (November Group) and exhibits annually in the renowned Große Berliner Kunstausstellung (Great Berlin Art Exhibition...

  • Divide
    By Doug Freed
    Located in Tulsa, OK
Divide by artist Doug Freed is a deep blue contemporary abstract landscape oil on canvas painting that measures 72 x 96 and is priced at $18,000. Doug Freed attempts to capture the mystical light found in natural atmospheric effects: the haze in the distance on humid summer days, the overcast gloom of winter skies, and the softness of landscape bathed in fog, and the quieting mood of approaching darkness. In his luminescent multi-paneled oil paintings Freed tries to find the gray area between traditional landscape painting and its abstraction into color fields. Artist Statement For nearly twenty years, I made non-objective grid structured paintings. I started to see references to landscape in these works. I've literalized those references by painting oil landscape vistas of horizons, clouds and bodies of water. These paintings consist of two or more vertical panels. Usually one panel is landscape imagery. The adjacent panels are often atmospheric voids with vestiges of recognizable landscapes. I try to capture the mystical light found in natural atmospheric effects: the haze in the distance on humid summer days, the overcast gloom of winter skies, and the softness of landscape bathed in fog, and the quieting mood of approaching darkness. My intent is to create paintings imbued with a meditative, spiritual presence suggesting issues about time and ecology. I do this by softly modulating color, tone and value. The color varies from quiet, monochromatic works to fully orchestrated chromatic ones. By blending from one hue to another I create color which makes its self gradually felt, weeping forth. In this manner, I create illusions of mysterious emanations of light, places where ones eyes and spirit are invited to linger. I try to imbue my work with a monumental presence, epic in both size and scope. I do this by orchestrating the separate elements of color, texture and structure into a harmonious whole. I seek a somewhat reductive image rich in value and contrast. The surface of the work is devoid of textural incidence. I don’t want anything to distract from the illusion of depth so I deny any marks which would hold the viewer on the surface of the painting. In my luminescent multi- paneled oil paintings I try to find the grey area between traditional landscape painting and its abstraction into color fields. The compositions are about ambiguities of form and void, foreground and background and surface and deep space. My roots lie in tonalism, color field painting and minimalism. However, my work contains an ever-present awareness of the dramatic use of light of the post-renaissance chiaroscurists. It combines a classical awareness of structure with a romantic use of color always in combination with a unique sense of ambiguity. My work continues in its evolution of style the search for an abstract means of probing the ambiguities of physical and spiritual experience of light, and its power to foster a more intense life of the spirit through profound emotional experience of form, color and composition.
