About the Item

John Alfred Wheeler A framed painting oil on canvas Picture Size :28 x 36" (70 x 90cm) Outside Frame Size: 35 x 43" (87.5 x 107.5cm) 1821 – 1903 An excellent example of Wheeler's work. The horse is called 'Retreat' and is fully signed and dated. It has had an excellent reline and is presented in a bespoke wooden frame. Wheeler was born at Andoversford, near Cheltenham. He was the son of John Wheeler and father of James Thomas Wheeler and Alfred Wheeler. He was not interested in art at first but enlisted in the 2nd Queens Corps which gave him plenty of experience and a knowledge of horses that was to be very useful in his artistic career. His army life was cut short by ill health and in 1842 he was discharged. In the same year he married and by 1854 he and his family were living in bath where he remained for almost 25years. During his time in the military he painted several military scenes of the North Somerset Yeomanry as well as hunting and horse portraits. In 1877 he moved to Hanwell where he built a house called Bath Villa and he was then close to London Galleries and where his clients were wealthier. Shortly after the move he painted the picture entitled ‘The Beaufort’ which had some 130 people as well as horse and hounds in, and measured 90 x 168 inches. He went on to paint other well-known canvases, some of which were published as prints and were sold for 15 guineas. He painted many of the leading racehorses of the day and amongst his patrons were the Dukes of Beaufort, Portland, Westminster, Rutland and Hamilton and the Earls of Roseberry and Caithness as well as Baron Rothschild. His works have been auctioned throughout Europe, the UK and the USA reaching up to $45,000.

  • 'Attilla' A Chestnut Horse in a Stable
    By John Frederick Herring Sr.
    Located in St. Albans, GB
Canvas Size: 28 x 36" (71 x 91cm) Outside Frame Size 36 x 44" (91 x 111cm) It is signed on the middle right on the wooden window. This is a stunning painting of a racehorse signed and dated J F Herring Sen 1842. The horse is named above the water trough as Attilla. As Herring was a renowned painter of racehorses it is likely that this was done for a wealthy patron who owned several. Although he painted many of the winners of the St. Ledger Cup Attilla was not one of these. Free carriage worldwide John Frederick HERRING Snr 1795 – 1865 A sporting painter, born in Surrey of American/Dutch extraction. At first he was a sign and coach painter. He then worked as a stable boy and coachman in Yorkshire until with the help of patrons he was able to study with Abraham Cooper RA, the only art education he appears to have had. He specialised in racing subjects and his few hunting scenes are rare. Herring painted the start of the 1844 Derby, which became known as ‘the dirtiest Derby in history’. He sometimes collaborated with his three sons, J.F.Jnr, Benjamin Jnr and Charles. He also collaborated with James Pollard on a number of racing scenes inc. ‘The Doncaster Gold Cup’, 1838, ‘The Emperor of Russia’s Cup at Ascot’ 1845 and ‘The Dead Heat for the Doncaster Great St. Ledger’ 1849 Herring painted 33 successive winners of the St. Ledger and not surprisingly lived a large part of his life in the Doncaster area before settling in Newmarket in 1830 and then in London in 1835. He suffered serious financial difficulties after his move to London which, thanks to a great friend and patron William Taylor Copeland (1797 – 1868) head of the Spode Porcelain factory at Stoke on Trent, was resolved. He painted many pictures of the Copeland family, some of which were adapted and used as designs on the Spode china...

Often bathed in a flood of golden light, these landscapes usually feature water and cattle or sheep on grassy banks; sometimes a solitary figure is seen the distance. Breanski belonged to the real stamp of those landscape painters who nimbly seized moments of the day. He had a great passion for the Highlands and perhaps more than any other, caught the atmospheric influences of the undulating landscape. Born in Greenwich...
