CHRISTINE McARTHUR was born in Kirkintilloch, near Glasgow, in 1953 and studied at Glasgow School of Art between 1971 and 1976. She taught and produced book illustrations before turning to paint full time. she was elected a member of the Royal Glasgow Institute and in 1995 a member of the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour. McArthur has been the recipient of a number of awards including The Scottish Arts Council Award and the Glasgow Society of Women Artist Trust Fund Award. She has exhibited widely in the UK, particularly in London and Scotland, as well as in Russia, Hong Kong, Her early work was primarily in oil and she became well known for her large scale still life paintings on canvas. In the late 1980s she began to work in oil pastel and watercolour but more recently she has reverted to oil, as well as acrylic and collage. She has exhibited widely with solo exhibitions in the Roger Billcliffe Gallery, Glasgow, Lemon Street Gallery, Truro, and Ainscough Gallery, London, among others. AWARDS S.E.D. travelling scholarship 1975, and 1976, Arts Council Award 1979, and 2004. Glasgow Society of Women Artist’s Trust Fund Award, Lauder Award; R.G.I., N.S. Macfarlane Award; Alexander Graham Munro prize, RSW. Christine McArthur was awarded Scottish Education Department travelling scholarships in 1975 and 1976 and was elected a member of the Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts in 1990. In 1995 she was elected a member of the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour. In 1997 John Lewis commissioned four large murals – each 6ft x 15ft - for the Glasgow store in 1999. In 2002 she received a commission from John Lewis for murals for the extension to their Peter Jones store, Sloane Square, London. Aaron Fink (American, b. 1955) Apples Signed and dated "Aaron Fink" lower right on Arches deckle edged paper. it is pencil signed and dedicated in pencil. it is not numbered and might be a rare artist's proof print. (this is possibly a woodblock or woodcut print from the looks of it but I have seen it described as a lithograph so I am selling it thusly.) Born in Boston, Fink received his BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art and his MFA from the Yale University School of Art. His work has been exhibited widely throughout the U.S., Europe, Japan and Australia. He has been the subject of solo exhibitions at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the Muskegon Museum of Art, Michigan, the Rockford Art Museum, Illinois, and Colorado State University, Fort Collins. In 2002 a monograph on Fink’s work, Out of the Ordinary, was published, with text by Eleanor Heartney. In 1983 Fink met the collector John Powers, who remained a strong supporter of his work until his death in 1999. Fink’s work is represented in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Hara Museum, Tokyo, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, the Museum of Modern Art, New York and the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC, among many others. Fink currently divides his time between Boston and Rockport, Massachusetts. Ben-Zion (1897-1987) Flower Piece with Black Vase Oil on board, Hand signed 'Ben-Zion ' lower right, with the artist 's label and label from Duveen-Graham gallery, NY. 16 x 7 3/4 in., unframed as intended, Born in 1897, Ben-Zion Weinman celebrated his European Jewish heritage in his visual works as a sculptor, painter, and printmaker. Influenced by Spinoza, Knut Hamsun, and Wladyslaw Reymont, as well as Hebrew literature, Ben-Zion wrote poetry and essays that, like his visual work, attempt to reveal the deep “connection between man and the divine, and between man and earth.” An emigrant from the Ukraine, he came to the US in 1920. He wrote fairy tales and poems in Hebrew under the name Benzion Weinman, but when he began painting he dropped his last name and hyphenated his first, saying an artist needed only one name. Ben-Zion was a founding member of “The Ten: An Independent Group” The Ten” a 1930’s avant-garde group, Painted on anything handy. Ben-Zion often used cabinet doors (panels) in his work. Other members of group included Ilya Bolotowsky, Lee Gatch, Adolf Gottlieb, Louis Harris, Yankel Kufeld, Marcus Rothkowitz (later known as Mark Rothko), Louis Schanker, and Joseph Solman. Over the course of the group's existence, seventeen artists exhibited as members of The Ten at nine different shows. The group's nine shows were held at galleries and locations around New York City, including one international exhibition in Paris.
