Signed lower left, 'Leon Franks'; additionally signed and titled, 'Portrait of a Girl', on old label verso. A bravura brushwork study of a young woman wearing a floral patterned shirt gazing calmly towards the viewer. A noted portrait and still life painter, Leon Franks studied at the Academie Julian and Grande Chaumiere in Paris and, subsequently, in Los Angeles at the Chouinard Art Institute and the Los Angeles Art Center. Franks additionally studied privately with Nicolai Fechin, Will Foster and F. Tolles Chamberlain. Before settling in Los Angeles in 1936, where Franks continued his education and began designing for the movie industry, he did portraits and decorations for Vancouver theaters. A substantial and psychologically penetrating study of the American musician. Signed lower right with monogram; titled and dated, verso, 1977. Born in England, Pearl Took first studied at the Skipton Art School (1943-7) and, subsequently, at Sir John Cass College (1947-9). After immigrating to California in 1957, Took commenced her active career as a fine artist, also becoming an art teacher at Pasadena City College and a freelance illustrator with the Pasadena City News. As her painting style matured and evolved, she continued to further her studies, including at such prestigious institutions as the California State College, the Art Center of Design, the Otis Art Institute and the Parsons School...

Initialed lower left, 'H.S.' for Henrik Schouboe (Danish, 1876-1949) and painted circa 1915. Henrik Schouboe first studied at the Copenhagen's Royal Academy of Fine Arts from 1894-1901 and, from 1903-1910, in Italy and Paris. He was awarded numerous stipends and scholarships including the Larssen (1902-3) and the Akademie Scholarship in 1908. In 1906, he had exhibited for the first time at the Charlottenborg where his submitted entry was purchased by the leading Danish painter of the time, Kristian Zahrtmann, for his personal collection. Schouboe continued to exhibit both domestically and internationally for over thirty years and was the recipient of a variety of prizes, medals and juried awards including the purchase of his 1908 Charlottenborg entry, 'Young Couple in a Landscape', by the State Museum of Art for inclusion in the Danish national collection. Schouboe's work is held in the permanent collections of numerous museums including Copenhagen, Aabenraa, Maribo and the Aalborg Art Museums.
