About the Item

Emilio Grau Sala (1911-1975) - La Rochelle - Mixed media Artwork 49x65 cm. Frame measures 69x85 cm. Son of cartoonist Juan Grau Miró, he was born in Barcelona in 1911. Although he attended the School of Fine Arts, his training is considered largely self-taught. His first exhibition takes place in 1930, at the "Badriñas Gallery" in the same city. At the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War (1936), Grau Sala left Spain with his wife, also a painter Ángeles Santos, and settled in Paris. There it will remain for 25 years. In Paris, Grau Sala knows the avant-garde up close but clearly opts for a friendly and colorful figuration, derived from Impressionism and Fauvism. It was a path already taken up by the commercial circuit, surpassed in terms of novelty by cubism and surrealism, but which was kept alive at a high level thanks to masters such as Pierre Bonnard, Chagall and Raoul Dufy, whom Grau Sala followed. perhaps excessively dependent. This stylistic choice of the artist conditioned that of his wife, leading her towards the conventional landscape, which certified the end of Ángeles Santos as a singular surrealist creator, an influence that critics did not hesitate to lament.
