Henry Lamb
Large Post Impressionist Oil Portrait of artist's daughter Henrietta Phipps

1956

About the Item

Henry Lamb MC RA 1883 - 1960 Henry Lamb is still to my mind seriously underrated and undervalued. His work is always stirring in some ways, even his portraits have enigmatic quality. His backgrounds are also sublime, he blends colours that often don't look like they belong together. Henry Lamb was a pupil of Augustus John, who remained a lifelong friend and supporter of Lamb's work. Lamb had a longstanding relationship with John's wife Dorelia, he was also pursued relentlessly by Lytton Strachey whose portrait is probably his most famous and striking. Born in Adelaide and moved to England to study, he later moved from Poole and eventually settled in Coombe Bissett, near Salisbury where he died in 1960. Henry Lamb is such an important painter from the 20th Century, a founder member of both the Camden Town Group in 1911 and the London Group in 1913. Perhaps one of his most famous works is the amazing portrait of Lytton Strachey now housed in the Tate Gallery and possibly one of the most striking portraits of that era. His second wife was Lady Pansy Pakenham and they had three children together, Henrietta the first born. Henrietta (nee Lamb) was herself a famed landscape gardener and worked for Kensington and Chelsea Council and landscaped a number of their public areas. It is signed and dated 1956. It is housed in a beautiful handmade gilt frame. Kind Regards

  • Victorian Oil of Children on beach and fisherman sorting the fish Cornwall
    By John Robertson Reid

JOHN ROBERTSON REID RBA, ROI, RI British 1851 – 1926 “Harvest of the Sea” Oil on canvas, Signed and Framed. John Robertson Reid was born in Edinburgh and studied at the Royal Scottish Academy schools before moving to Cornwall and later London. He became interested in the social-realist movement; probably influenced by Bastien-Lepage and in 1879 his “Toil and Pleasure” was hung in the Royal Academy and bought by the Chantrey Bequest. He continued to exhibit at the Royal Academy and at the Royal Society of British Artists and also the Royal Institute, he was a member of all three Institutes. Reid’s subjects – field workers, humble people – were similar to those of Bastien-Lepage, but his handling of the paint was more dynamic and reflected his training at the Scottish Academy under Chalmers and McTaggart. He was also a good colourist, and some of his coastal scenes with fishermen and women in the foreground, have rich blues and greens, of which ours is a typical example. Reid was also a fine watercolourist in a breezy style similar to that of David Cox. Not all his work was about hard work he also painted rural people at rest or playing cricket and was always capable of brilliant work; his Venetian...

  • La lecture au jardin (Lesson in the Garden)
    By Georges d'Espagnat
    Located in New Orleans, LA
French Post-Impressionist painter Georges d’Espagnat captures a charming moment between a mother and her child in this vibrant oil on canvas. Rendered with a studied use of complementary colors and bold brushstrokes, the painting showcases the artist's unique Post-Impressionist style. Remembered as one of the most individualistic artists of the 20th century, his distinctive canvases bring together the loose brushwork of the Impressionists and the bold color palette favored by the Fauves. Together, they achieve a vibrant spontaneity that lends itself well to the carefree subjects of the present work. Masterfully composed, La lecture au jardin moves beyond the Impressionist instinct to capture a fleeting moment on canvas. Rather, d'Espagnat succeeds in creating a deep feeling of harmony in the work. Warm colors are perfectly balanced with cool tones, while vertical and horizontal lines are softened by the curves of the foliage and his subjects' figures. Through his simplification of forms and intentional use of color and line, he creates a scene that is carefully designed and thoroughly modern. A similar view of a mother and her child by d'Espagnat is currently in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York). The Post-Impressionist painter was an individualist since his youth, choosing to forgo traditional schooling in order to independently study the Old Masters in the Louvre. He soon became involved with the most prominent Impressionist and Post-Impressionist painters of the age, including Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Paul Signac, who themselves existed outside the traditional norms of French Academic training. In 1891, he exhibited at the Salon des Refusés, and again the following year at the Salon des Indépendants. By 1895, he held his first one-man show in Paris, and just three years later his success earned him a solo show at the prestigious Durand-Ruel Gallery. Between 1905 and 1910 he made several trips to visit Renoir on the Côte d’Azur. Their close friendship resulted in a group exhibition at Marcel Bernheim...
