Men & Motorcycles, Mark Beard: Academic Figurative Painting of Four Male Models

date unknown

About the Item

Academic style figurative painting of four male motorcycle riders by Mark Beard aka "Bruce Sargeant" "Men and Motorcycles", painted in the early 2000's for Abercrombie and Fitch's flagship store in Milan, Italy 83 x 88.75 inches unframed, 88.5 x 94.25 inches with a simple black painted wood frame Signed "Bruce Sargeant", upper right Good condition based on scale, size, and age (see condition notes below) This figurative painting of four young men on a motorcycle joyride was made by Mark Beard under his fictitious artistic persona, Bruce Sargeant. Painted in a modern Academic style, the handsome athletic men are captured in a lush green forest setting, taking a rest during a leisurely motorcycle ride. Two shirtless men on the left look away from the viewer, exhibiting their muscular physiques in the afternoon sun. Their skin is slate grey, a signature color choice by the artist, used to highlight their statuesque bodies. The two men on the right, outfitted in leather jackets and 1940's riding attire, are seen mounted on their motorcycles, ready to continue the day's journey. The painting on canvas is framed in a simple black painted wood frame measuring 88.5 x 94.25 x 2 inches and is signed in the upper right corner. This painting is a selection from a large mural the artist was commissioned to paint for Abercrombie and Fitch's flagship stores. This particular piece was part of the mural in Milan which stretched several floors. Beard worked on the commission in his NYC studio and completed the work in around 2005. Condition notes: This painting is a section from a larger mural that was affixed to the wall of the Abercrombie and Fitch store with plaster. When the murals were taken down, plaster remnants stayed on the back of the canvases. The plaster is an an inert material that will have no impact archivally on the painting. It does, although, add more weight to the painting (this particular piece weighs about 75 lbs.). The existing frame is not a high-end construction, rather a simple solution for presenting the painting on the wall for the exhibit. There are some raised creases on the surface that occurred when the painting was removed from the wall in Milan and rolled to be shipped back to the US. They are unnoticeable with the correct lighting, hence why they're not seen in the installation views. The artist has applied multiple layers of Liquin to prevent any future cracking. About the artist: Mark Beard is perhaps the most literal example of an artist pulled in so many different directions that he chose to “invent” six different personae in which to channel his overflowing energy and need for expression. Each painting style is radically different from the next, so it remains entirely believable that the work could stem from six completely different people of different time periods and different schools of thought. With a background in set design, Beard has always been one who could conjure total magic with anything available. Beard paints under the fictitious persona of Bruce Sargeant, his half American-half English uncle who painted a parade of Arcadian scenes suggesting afternoons of young men sporting in the countryside, rowing, bicycling, hunting or wrestling during the 1930's and 40's. Clean shaven, well manicured youths pose casually, indulging every opportunity to display a titillating flex of stone-like musculature. Like modern Greek statues, Beard paints these prestigious figures oftentimes in pairs of twos and threes in a lazy state of beautiful passivity. Mark Beard keeps himself fresh with challenge, undertaking ambitious commissions and committing to weekly sketch sessions with live models in his Manhattan studio. The result of this dedicated practice is a stunning array of graphite and conte crayon drawings on Arches paper. Mark Beard, born in 1956 in Salt Lake city, now lives in New York City. His works are in museum collections worldwide, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City; the Museum of Modern Art, New York City; the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York City; the Boston Museum of Fine Arts; and the Harvard, Yale, and Princeton University Art Museums; among many others. We would not be the least bit surprised to see new ‘personas’ emerge in the coming years.

Young girl from Tetouan, Morocco Signed (center right) Oil on canvas In this important oil on canvas, French Orientalist painter Charles Landelle captures the engaging visage of a young Moroccan woman in a moment of tranquil contemplation. Seated on the floor of what is almost certainly an opulent riad, the young woman wears an intricately embroidered Moroccan kaftan and headdress. The sumptuous patterns on the floor and in the background lend an additional warmth to the strikingly vivid red hues which dominate the composition and are a hallmark of Landelle’s work. The symbols behind the young woman may represent either the Jewish Star of David or the Islamic Seal...

  • A Pompeian Lady
    By John William Godward
    Located in New Orleans, LA
John William Godward 1861-1922 British A Pompeian Lady Signed and dated "J.W. Godward 1904" (lower right, partially covered by frame) Oil on canvas One of the last and greatest Victorian neoclassical painters, John William Godward is celebrated for his flawlessly executed images of graceful women posed in idealized ancient settings. In this work, entitled A Pompeian Lady, a classical beauty is caught idling in a moment of quiet, solitary reflection. Godward's elegant subjects are depicted with a degree of technical mastery that remains unsurpassed, and the work's dramatic palette, luxurious fabrics and classical vision are all characteristics of his unique take on the neoclassical style. Godward was unmatched in terms of his technical skill and attention to detail. A master of contrasting textures, he paints a diaphanous gown draping against the model’s smooth, milky white skin, which sits against the painstakingly rendered individual hairs of a tiger’s pel. Scintillating color permeates the canvas as well, energizing the otherwise static scene. Each element is given careful attention, and the overall effect is one of both immaculate technique and sensual tactility. Along with his contemporary and mentor, Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema, Godward set the tone for the Victorian neoclassicist movement. He built his career upon creating images of idealized feminine beauty infused with a Greco-Roman-inspired style. Though greatly influenced by Alma-Tadema, Godward distinguished himself through his predilection for the solitary female figure. His fame rose dramatically in the first few years of the 20th century, when the present work was completed, due to the burgeoning strength of the British Empire and the Victorian society’s preoccupation with ancient Rome. To many of the newly affluent, Roman society was, as Iain Gale writes, “a flawless mirror of their own immaculate world.” The sensuality and mystery of Godward’s maidens, combined with his impressive antique backdrops...
