Art Deco Woodcut of Swimmer W/ Sailboats Signed "WB" in Custom Art Deco Frame

circa 1930

About the Item

This lovely Art Deco Woodcut of Swimmer W/ Sailboats is by an Unknown artist, signed "WB" and originates from the United States, Circa 1930. Features a slender vertical rectangular composition with a standing male figure adorned in a bathing suit who appears to be standing on a dock before an expanse of water with sailboats floating alongside his head and shoulders in the background. A woodcut print, this piece utilizes carved lines with hatch work and high contrast of light and dark forms depicting the subject matter, particularly effective at defining the musculature and form of the figure while the background of water peaks through, depicted largely via the white negative space surrounding the man, creating the illusion of bright light reflecting from the water and enveloping the space. The frame in ebonized walnut is highly geometric and tiered, utilizing the geometry to round the form and add material intrigue, connecting to the bold and gestural lines of the print. This piece will style beautifully in a wide array of settings and spaces, from Art Deco to Mid-Century Modernist and Contemporary Interiors. In Excellent Vintage Condition. • Romanticist Oil on Burlap Painting of a Nude Male Figure Bathing in a River
    Located in New York, NY
This elegant romanticist oil on burlap painting was realized by an unheralded master during the first part of the 20th century. Realized in tight, yet expressionistic brush strokes, the painting depicts a nude male figure in the foreground with his back turned towards the viewer. The man has one knee raised (perhaps grounded on a boulder) and an arm extended into the abstract background whose frenetic white stroked and blocks of mossy greens suggests a frothing river. He sits on a large river stone in a rich olive hue clutching a white towel in his right hand that supports the weight of his body. The figure's torqued position serves to highlight his muscular physique- whose ideal proportions recalls classical Greek sculpture. In the bottom right portion of the composition, there is an abstracted form in a sumptuous brick red that offers an understated pop of color that provides a dynamic contrast to the flesh tones, organic greens and flaxen hues of the figure's hair. Masterfully painted in a sophisticated palate, this painting would be a winning addition to any style of interior from traditional to contemporary, and is sure to be appreciated by connoisseurs of classical art and homoerotic art...

Artwork Details: Isabel Rock , 'Staring at the Sun' 99.7 x 70.2cm, collaged woodblock print and acrylic ink on 410gsm Somerset Satin paper, 2011 In Isabels own words; 'Staring at the Sun' The man stood on the mountain and stared at the golden sun. The sun stared back at him, its heat blazed and burnt his eyes, the birds sang a maddening tune like they were pecking at his eardrums. The man pointed his finger and shouted, ' you lied to me' at the sun. The sun laughed and said 'you wanted to believe me. I told you what you had already decided in your head to be the most convenient thing for you.' The man raged and hopped in what looked to the birds like a beautiful dance. 'Trickery, skulduggery!' he shouted. 'villain, thief, abomination!' The sun blinked and smiled calmly. It had seen a lot from humans, there was nothing that could surprise it now. *Please note we are happy to ship this work rolled in an art tube. Artwork Provenance: from the Artist Studio photo credits, Isabel working, black and white shots, James Brown About Isabel Rock and her work: Taking inspiration from Japanese woodblock prints and Indian miniature painting Rock has developed a unique collage technique that combines bold structures with large-scale woodblock prints and intricate detailing. The subject is a grand mixture of humour, drama, hidden morals, fanciful characters, modern culture, mythical beings and fantastical situations. Rock creates a world that pulls you in and demands your attention. Quality of line is paramount, the drawings are created using a dipping pen and acrylic ink. An essential tool is a squirrel’s hair brush that gives incredible fine lines and was purchased on her travels in India. Born in Hammersmith, London in 1981, Rock knew her destiny was to be an artist. Studying Fine Art Printmaking at The University of Brighton and graduating with First Class Honours in 2004 she went on to do a Masters Degree at The Royal College of Art in London, continuing her studies in printmaking and drawing, graduating in 2008. Her first solo show at Bearspace Gallery in Deptford, London in April 2009 sold out and was the beginning of a career that continues to rise. Rock participated in the first ever India Art Fair represented by Art 1821...
