Available for sale; this original oil painting is by Alfred Fontville De Breanski Jnr and dates from around 1904.
The painting is presented and supplied untouched in its original substantial Edwardian ornate frame of substantial depth (which is shown in these photographs) and behind glass.
The gold colouring of the frame has been restored by hand in the 1990s when in previous ownership. The frame presents in a pronounced uniform color throughout.
This antique painting is in very good condition, commensurate with its age. It wants for nothing and is supplied ready to hang and display.

Part of the famous Breanski family of artists, Alfred Fontville de Breanski is known for his skilled and colorful landscapes and English garden scenes.
He was born on 20th August 1877 at Lewisham, London. He was one of seven children born to the prolific British artist, Alfred De Breanski (1852-1928) and his wife Annie Roberts, also as artist. His uncle, Gustave de Breanski, was also an accomplished artist in his own right. Alfred learnt his craft from his parents, then studied at St. Martin’s School of Art under Cecil Rea, and later in Paris under Whistler.
Alfred’s art emanated that of his father in subject matter and palette, though he developed a style which was less formal, and learnt to perfectly capture the light at different times of day. Breanski travelled and worked extensively throughout Scotland, Wales, the Lake District, Surrey, Sussex and Buckinghamshire. He is known to have also worked in France and Italy. His work is almost exclusively concerned with natural landscape and rustic scenes and his later work shows the influence of Impressionism.
His style of painting lent itself to the early developments in poster design being pioneered by the Underground at the time. In 1915 Breanski produced a couple of posters encouraging travel to London for what was then known as the Underground Electric Railways Company. In doing so he positioned himself firmly in the modern movement of the early twentieth century, unifying so-called ‘high art’ with ‘commercial art’. This was very much in the spirit of the Parisian poster artists, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and Jules Chéret.
Breanski Jnr lived in various places in the South West before making his home at 11 Robert Street, Regent’s Part, London. He died in Tonbridge, Kent, in 1957. During his lifetime Alfred Breanski exhibited several works at the Royal Academy from 1904 and at the Royal Society of British Artists, as well as in the provinces. The works of he and his father remain very popular today.

This original oil on canvas painting by Alfred de Breanski Jnr depicts Old Streatley Mill, on the River Thames, near Goring in Oxfordshire, UK. There was a mill on this site as far back as the Domesday Book, owned by the nuns of Goring. The last mill was destroyed by fire in 1926 and never re-built. The mill itself is captured as a red brick building, straddled over the river, with a red tiled roof. There is some white picket fencing on a balcony over the water and a long raised wooded walkway leading to the front entrance of the building. We view the mill from a position on the opposite bank of the river, and note the lush grassy banks and the presence of beautiful white ducks on both banks. The banks on the far side of the river are constrained by wooden timbers to prevent erosion. There is the figure of a female in a long pink dress apparently feeding the ducks on the far bank, and a second figure, a male, on the walkway, perhaps engaging her in conversation. There are large trees on both riverbanks, in full leaf, suggesting that this is a summer scene. The river itself is clearly flowing but appears calm, and the sky above is pale blue, with numerous white clouds. The overall scene is very English, very pleasant, a perfect glimpse of a time long gone.

Alfred de Breanski Jnr.
Alfred de Breanski, Jr is the son of renowned plein art landscape artist Alfred de Breanski, Sr, and began his career painting the Highlands of Scotland and scenes in England and Wales. Unlike the romantic realism of his father, Breanski, Jr ventured into a style of his own, influenced by the changing impressionistic and post impressionistic art of his time. His colors are more vibrant, and he chooses seascapes as well as landscapes with impressionistic pastels and light with often realistic foreground subjects. Alfred de Breanski, Jr, also known as Alfred Fontville de Breanski, studied at St Martin's School of Art, with his father and his Uncle Gustav, and painter of seascapes. His mother, Annie Roberts, was also a painter. De Breanski, Jnr spent time in France, where he developed his own style of landscape art distinctive from his father. Alfred Sr and his brother Gustav were sons of Polish immigrants into Britain, and established themselves as well known and sought after fine artists. They were known for travelling to the Highlands of Scotland, as well as Wales and the woodlands north of London to find their ideal landscape, and to paint in the open air, to capture the fleeting light in realistic detail. Alfred de Breanski, Jr followed this tradition, with more vivid greens, and with a flair all his own.

Henry Robinson Hall was a Victorian and Edwardian artist who was particularly noted for his works on Highland cattle. He painted in both oils and watercolors. He was born in York to Eliza Robinson in 1859 and registered as Henry Robinson. His mother subsequently married John Storey Hall in 1867, and so his surname was changed accordingly. Hall lived for a while in Newcastle upon Tyne where he became involved in the artistic community. He later moved to Fylde in Lancashire and married. He later lived in Barrow in Furness and then Coniston in Cumbria, where he had a studio and also ran an artists’ supplies shop and café. He died in Coniston on 31st May 1927 and is buried in the churchyard of St. Andrews church there. Hall exhibited his works from 1895-1903 at the Royal Academy, the Royal Society of Artists and the Royal Scottish Academy. Today his works are held in the National Collection, the Atkinson Art Gallery, the Oldham Gallery, the Rossendale Museum and the Lakeland Arts Trust. Bredon’s Norton is a village located in the Cotswolds, on the slopes of Bredon Hill in South Worcestershire. The America women’s rights activist Victoria Woodhull Martin moved to the village in 1901 and by 1908 had set up an agricultural school for women at her Norton’s Park estate. The Antarctic explore Raymond Priestley also lived there. Although Bates was living in Surrey at the time of this painting, he would have been familiar with the area after having lived and worked in Worcestershire for some considerable time. He would have also most likely been aware of Victoria Woodhull Martin and the school. David Bates was born in March, Cambridge in 1840 to Benjamin Bates a shoe maker and Sarah Bates. By 1851, the family had moved to Upton upon Severn in Worcestershire and from 1855 Bates became an apprentice at the Royal Worcester Porcelain Works in Worcester. There he developed his artistic talent, painting flower decorations onto vases and plates. At some point after 1861, he became a full time artist and made his debut at the Royal Academy in 1863, continuing to exhibit there until 1893. He also exhibited at the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists, Suffolk Street and the Grosvenor Gallery. He married Elizabeth Higgs from Worcester in 1867 and they lived at Cherry Orchard, Bath Road in Worcester where their children were later born. Edward Henry Eugene Fletcher was a marine artist who was born in Marylebone, London on 23 July 1857 to Robert Henry Fletcher and Julia Pennell. His father worked for the Bengal Pilot Service guiding shipping along the Hooghly River between Calcutta and the Bay of Bengal. After the death of his father in 1862, his mother married the picture dealer Reuben Brooks. He attended the Bradmore House School in Chiswick Lane before enrolling at the Chelsea School of Art, where he became a close friend of the landscape artist Daniel Sherrin. Fletcher initially enlisted in the Army Hospital Corp, serving in Nova Scotia but was invalided out in 1882 at the age of 24 due to an eye condition. His records indicate he was 6ft tall with fair hair and grey eyes. He continued to paint in his spare time and undoubtedly his travels would have inspired his subject matter and given him a deeper knowledge of shipping and the sea. He married Annie Reed Moses in 1886 at Norwich and they lived in Margate before moving back to London to live in Blackheath around 1890. He is widely believed to have set up an auction business during this time to help support his growing family, however , perhaps due to the return of ill health he decided to give it up to focus on painting. Although he did not exhibit, he sold his work mainly through art galleries, possibly aided by his step father. He also used the pseudonym of John Hayes which was probably for contractual reasons. By 1901, he had established himself as a full time artist and was living at Georgette Place in Greenwich with his wife and their 5 children. He later moved to 99 Lee Road, Blackheath where he spent the rest of his life. He died at Blackheath on 23 June, 1945.
