"Anna Richards Brewster was among the most successful international women artists of her time, yet her name has largely been forgotten. Upon her death in 1952, memorial exhibitions were organized at the Museum of the City of New York, the Butler Institute of American Artand the Georgia Art Museum. Her husband gave much of her work to public and private institutions at the time, and published a series of four books detailing her life and art. She is known today for sculptures and illustrations as well as paintings, which are found in museums and private collections across the United States and Europe. Like many American artists at the turn of the 20th century, Brewster made paintings of scenes from her travels; the Huntsville Museum of Art has one of fishermen in Volendam. Throughout the 1970s, her work was included in several posthumous exhibitions alongside the paintings of her father William Trost Richards, including at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the New Britain Museum of American Art. Recent decades have seen a slight revival of interest in her work, including a solo exhibition at the Newport Art Museum in 1985, and a major solo exhibition in 2008 which traveled between the Hudson River Museum, Butler Institute of American Art and the Fresno Metropolitan Museum. The catalogue for the 2008 exhibition, edited by Judith Kafka Maxwell, contained extensive biographical articles, as well as the first scholarly appraisals of her life and works within the context of late Victorian and early twentieth century women artists."

Anna Richards Brewster
Anna Richards Brewster (1870–1952) was an accomplished American artist born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Her artistic lineage included a poet-playwright mother and a landscape painter father. She studied at Cowles Art School in Boston and under William Merritt Chase and John LaFarge in New York. Notably, she won the Dodge Prize from the National Academy in 1890. Brewster's creative journey led her to Europe, where she painted alongside her father and studied in Paris. Settling in London in 1896, she exhibited at the Royal Academy and illustrated various publications. In 1905, she married and traveled extensively with her husband, further inspiring her art. Despite personal tragedy, including the loss of her son, Brewster continued to contribute to the artistic community. She was a founding member of the Scarsdale Art Association and created notable commissions, including a Red Cross poster during WWI. Brewster's legacy was revived posthumously, with exhibitions at prestigious institutions and growing interest in her work. She passed away in 1952, leaving a diverse body of art encompassing paintings, sculptures, and illustrations. Today, her contributions to late Victorian and early 20th-century art, particularly as a successful international woman artist, continue to gain appreciation and recognition.

Buehr was born in Feuerbach - near Stuttgart. He was the son of Frederick Buehr and Henrietta Doh (Dohna?). He moved to Chicago with his parents and siblings in the 1880s. In Chicago, young Karl worked at various jobs until he was employed by a lithograph company near the Art Institute of Chicago. Introduced to art at work, Karl paid regular visits to the Art Institute, where he found part-time employment, enabling him to enroll in night classes. Later, working at the Institute as a night watchman, he had a unique opportunity to study the masters and actually posted sketchings that blended in favorably with student's work. Having studied under John H. Vanderpoel, Buehr graduated with honors, while his work aroused such admiration that he was offered a teaching post there, which he maintained for many years thereafter. He graduated from the Art Inst. of Chicago and served in the IL Cav in the Spanish–American War. Mary Hess became Karl's wife—she was a student of his and an accomplished artist in her own right. In 1922, he was elected into the National Academy of Design as an Associate member. Art Studies in Europe In 1904, Buehr received a bronze medal at the St. Louis Universal Exposition, then, in 1905, Buehr and his family moved to France, thanks to a wealthy Chicago patron, and they spent the following year in Taormina, Sicily, where the artist painted local subjects, executing both genre subjects and landscapes as well as time in Venice. Buehr spent at least some time in Paris, where he worked with Raphaël Collin at the Académie Julian. Giverny and American Impressionism Prior to this time, Buehr had developed a quasi-impressionistic style, but after 1909, when he began spending summers near Monet in Giverny, his work became decidedly characteristic of that plein-air style but he began focusing on female subjects posed out-of-doors. He remained for some time in Giverny, and here he became well-acquainted with other well known expatriate America impressionists such as Richard Miller, Theodore Earl Butler, Frederick Frieseke, and Lawton Parker. It seems likely that Buehr met Monet, since his own daughter Kathleen and Monet’s granddaughter, Lili Butler, were playmates, according to George Buehr, the painter’s son. His other daughter Lydia died before adulthood due to diabetes. He returned to Chicago at the onset of World War I and taught at The Art Inst for many years.
