Esther Schlebos
Treeroots-21st Century Landscape Oil Painting by Dutch painter Esther Schlebos

2019

About the Item

Esther Schlebos won "The Prix de Norvège" on her graduation in July 2019 for her landscape paintings with which she graduated. Together with Marein Konijn, her fellow student and also winner, she was then in Norway for a week for a study trip for inspiration and introduction. The artist is introduced to Galerie Bonnard at this group exhibition "Artists inspired by van Gogh" with a special work. The artist likes to paint nature and to show with thick layers of paint 1all the earth colors she sees. The work gets a depth like you really can go 'in' it. The artist herself speaks about her contribution to this exhibition: My work is inspired by the painting "Tree Roots" by Vincent van Gogh. This enigmatic and initially abstract-looking work by Van Gogh was probably his last work before he died. With a pasty paint test I present my interpretation of the mysterious "underworld" of the forest. Art critic Eric Bos about the work of Esther Schlebos: Primal Images Esther Schlebos (1967) lives in Borger-Odoorn and paints landscapes in Drenthe. Drentser can't, especially because she shows a penchant for painting hunebeds. In her hands, those large rolling stones from the Ice Age are weighty carriers of an ancient past, covered with colorful mosses and lichens reminiscent of the fur of primordial animals. Her images are monumental and exude an inner, mysterious power. In her paintings of old tree root systems you get the association with polyps that anxiously grasp the black primeval soil of the Drenthe landscape. An ideal country for painters.
