Georges Planes
Pair of French Impressionist Paintings, The City of Rouen and the River Barges

1930s

About the Item

A pair of French Impressionist landscape views by Georges Planes. (Dimensions given are for each painting.) The first painting: is an early 20th Century drawing and watercolour view of the city and riverscape at Rouen. The work is signed and dated bottom right in red ink. There is also a watermark and oval stamp for 'Arches' paper. The painting is very nicely framed in a blue painted wood frame with a deep insert and gilt filet. A charming atmospheric view of the iconic French town of Rouen painted from the viewpoint of the high surrounding hills so giving an aerial view of the river, city, bridges and in the distance the towers of the cathedral so beloved of Monet. The main ground is mainly painted in blues and mauves with a highlight of yellow colour, representing the grassy hill, in the bottom right corner. This moves the eye across the work and allows us to enjoy the long perspective. Planes has allowed his pencil to give definition to buildings and structures and then allowed the colour to flood over it in the Impressionist style. A very accomplished and mature painting. Rouen has always been an inspiration to the Impressionists. Claude Monet painted the cathedral there over 30 times. The second painting: an early 20th Century view of barges at a riverbank. The painting is signed bottom right and is also very nicely framed in a blue painted wood frame with a deep insert and gilt filet. A charming view of three barges, or 'peniches' as they are known in France, tied to the river bank, their bulk reflected in the passing river. On the bank a figure is walking towards us, giving some idea as to the large scale of the boats. Planes has introduced colour into his treatment of the riverbank, his beloved mauves and blues and as ever his characteristic drawing to give line under the blocks of colour. A very pleasing and accomplished composition. A noted and accomplished artist Georges Planes was a student of Fernand Cormon. He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français of which he was a member from 1923.

  • The Jurassic Coast, Dorset.
    By Ruskin Spear
    Located in Cotignac, FR
An English watercolour on paper coastal scene signed with initials 'RS' bottom right. Presented in its original gilt wood frame under glass with trade label to the backboard from Deighton’s Strand Gallery. This gallery was well-known during the 1930s as fine art dealers and frame makers – it was located off Trafalgar square. Though he often signed with his full name Ruskin Spear's work on paper 'Hammersmith Grove' is signed in the same initials as our work and hence the attribution. This work is also stylistically similar to his other drawings of seascapes and coastal landscapes. This is a charming and fresh view of a coastal landscape probably the Jurassic coast of Dorset or his beloved Cornwall. The vertiginous composition gives it an angular almost abstract form highlighted by the contrast between the colour of the rockface, the vegetation and the blue sea. The work is in nice condition and wonderful to have the original framing. Initially influenced by Walter Sickert, the Camden Town Group...
