Joseph Orient
Two Sunny animated landscapes with travellers with a river view, a town beyond

About the Item

Oil on panel Comes with a certificate by dr. Jan De Maere "In my opinion they are early works, inspired by the river views of Jan Griffier the Elder, the italianate coulisses by Dirck Both and the staffage by Jan Breughel the Elder and his follower Pieter Bout; Orient was one of the first painters at the beginning of the 18th century to revive the Flemish-Dutch landcsape tradition in Vienna, as other artists did in Prague. The style, the fine execution and the combination of these three elements and the mention of his mother’s family name in the signature, allow to place this two fine small landscapes in the early part of Orient’s career" - Prof. dr. Jan de Maere Orient Joseph, (born April 24, 1677 Purbach, Burgenland), † March 17, 1747 Schottenfeld, in his own house "Zur goldenen Sonne" (Bandgasse 41, Wien), was an Austro-Hungarian landscape painter. In 1703 in St. Ulrich, he married Anna Margarete Wolkas (* bef. 1688 Sieggraben. He was the son of the carpenter Martin Orient (* 1640, † before July 10, 1680) and his wife Ursula Vriendt. He studied in Vienna with Anton Faistenberger, a painter of ideal landscapes cappriccios. But Orient soon turned away from his master’s style. Having established his own studio, he was attracted to the Dutch and Flemisch landscapes of the 17th century, especially these of Jan Breughel the Elder and Pieter Bout for the staffage, for the landscape settings the italianate coulisses by Jan Both and the wide Rhine river views by Jan I. Griffier (1645-1718). He liked to use the concave mirror for the composition of his, mostly small, paintings. This created a grand space between the foreground staffage and the background view. The air is mostly clear. He had great skill in expressing the difference between seasons and the times of day, sunny or cloudy atmospheres. In his later paintings, the staffage (figures) mostly done by Janneck, Canton or Ferg, In the 1641, the Vienna Academy accepted him in as an associate member. In 1733, Orient spent some time in Saxony and Frankfurt/Main. Orient's students included Franz Christoph Janneck and Franz Josef de Paula Ferg, Johann Gabriel Canton, Johann Franz Nepomuk Lauterer and Johann Christoph Thurner. His landscapes are very well drawn and meticulously painted in cool colors. Later, Orient also included realistic vedutes (for example: the Klosterneuburg Abbey) in his work. Rösel engraved a sheet with forest and game after Orient, Janneck painted his portrait. Orient was important for the genesis of Viennese landscape painting before Johann Christian Brand.

  • Dutch School, 17th Century, Shipping in a Stiff Breeze, a City Beyond
    Located in Stockholm, SE
We are delighted to present a significant piece from the Dutch School, most likely dating back to the late 17th century. This captivating painting showcases the dynamic force of nature with three ships vigorously navigating through stormy waters. The foreground is a scene of nautical struggle, as figures are depicted working intensely with the sails, steering, and bracing against the tumultuous sea. In the serene background, the silhouette of a quaint town emerges, with spires from churches and the outlines of various buildings is visible. This juxtaposition of the calm town against the chaotic foreground serves as a powerful reminder of the unpredictability of life and nature. Dominating the canvas, the sky occupies two-thirds of the painting, filled with brooding clouds that occasionally break to reveal patches of blue. The presence of birds adds a dynamic element to the otherwise ominous atmosphere. While the artist remains unknown, the work is quintessentially Dutch in its execution, with meticulous attention to detail and a profound understanding of maritime life. The painting's oval shape is quite distinctive and is complemented by a suitably antique octagonal black frame, which adds to its historical charm. This piece is a testament to the mastery of Dutch maritime painting...
