An important American Impressionist oil painting, Walter Bowman Russell (1871-1963), Coral Gables Florida, 1927. Walter Bowman Russell was a very talented & charismatic figure, referred to as a "Creative Genius"; a talented painter, sculptor, author, illustrator & founder of the University of Science & Philosophy and in the early part of the 20th century as a builder who created over $30 Million worth of cooperative apartments. When Russell died in 1963 the celebrated journalist Walter Cronkite call him the "Leonardo da Vinci of our time". Russell's artistic career started when he attended Massachusetts Art School and the Académie Julian in Paris, in 1900 his allegorical painting "The Might of Ages" represented the United States at the Turin International Exhinbition in Italy and won several awards. This very beautiful colorful Impressionisitic painting depicts a Spanish style villa in Coral Gables, Miami, Florida, the stucco building with a pantile roof and striped yellow window awnings, with a palm tree and cactus plant and other tropical plants to the foreground. The painting is signed lower left, to the verso is an original label written by the artist's hand " A Spanish Patio [ In the residence of Mrs Hewett Brown Coral Gables Fla ] 1927 Walter Russell". In Alfred Frankel's book "Artists of Old Florida" it seems that Russell had visited Miami and painted in the area during the Summer seasons of 1925-1928. The Hewett Brown family were part of the Miami social circuit. The painting is in very good condition, it is housed in the original gilded frame, an important impressionistic panting by a very talented American artist and polymath.
