About the Item
Bleed # 202181 (Abstract Photography)
Chromogenic Print Face-mounted 3mm Matte Plexiglas — Unframed.
Edition: 1/3.
Work can be hung with either the WallCleat system (support bar supplied) or the screw-eye system if it needs support from wire or above.
Snell creates small production runs, printing each unique work in an edition of one to three.
His process begins by capturing a location or an object. He then digitally “decodes” the visual information present in that image. After reducing and simplifying the colors and forms, he begins an intensive “re-coding” process, during which the reduced formal elements of the work evolve their self-referential relationships within a new composition. This process blurs the boundary between “taking” and “making” a photograph. When the digital composition is complete, Snell converts it into a Chromogenic print using the Fujiflex printing system, which allows luminous, vibrant, colorful photographic printing onto metallic paper. The print is then mounted onto Plexiglass.
Paul Snell combines traditional and digital techniques to explore the possibilities of abstraction and minimalism in contemporary photo media. Paul Snell’s recent works lure the viewer into a meditation on image saturation. The title of this exhibition, Visceral, brings the body back into the equation – not just the eye and brain, but the gut. These new works have emerged instinctively out of the artist’s process, and consequently, they grab the viewer viscerally, harnessing the senses and luring them around the composition into voids and points of tension. He lives and works in Launceston, Tasmania.

Paul Snell
Paul Snell combines traditional and digital techniques to explore the possibilities of abstraction and minimalism in contemporary photo-media. Snell earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of Tasmania in 1989, his BFA (Honors) from the University of Tasmania in 1995, and his Masters of Contemporary Arts from the University of Tasmania in 2011. Snell has exhibited his work extensively throughout Australia and Tasmania, and selectively in the United States.
His work is included in numerous public and private collections, including that of ArtBank, the Devonport Regional Gallery, the Burnie Regional Gallery, and the Justin House Museum. Snell creates small production runs, printing each unique work in an edition of one to three. His process begins by capturing a location or an object on film with a traditional camera. He then digitally “decodes” the visual information present in that image. After reducing and simplifying the colors and forms, he begins an intensive “re-coding” process, during which the reduced formal elements of the work evolve their own self-referential relationships within a new composition. This process blurs the boundary between “taking” and “making” a photograph. When the digital composition is complete, Snell converts it into a Chromogenic print using the Lambda printing system, which allows luminous, vibrant, colorful photographic printing onto metallic paper. The print is then mounted onto Plexiglass.

The work is individually signed and numbered verso, with both a unique catalogue raisonné number and the edition number for guaranteed authenticity. From an edition of 8 Image size ⋅ 94cm H x 120cm W ⋅ 3 panels . Le Klint Studio is an inspiration to anyone who loves paper folding, contemporary design, and light. So, of course, I couldn’t resist making a series of origami like geometries for a new set of works in 2015. Le Klint Studio, to my mind, are particularly well known for their folded paper pendant shades, contemporary designs which are as beautiful as they are ubiquitous. The image I made is not an identikit line work, more an homage based around some of the origami like folds they use, with the addition of colour glazes and offset transparencies. I've also added a grid like structure of darkly shaded lines and accents, that brings the geometry to life. The first piece I drew, ACDH (acid house...Category

From an edition of 8 Image size ⋅ 84cm H x 200cm W . Back in the shoegazing years, when I was studying at the old Hornsey School of Art, there was a beautiful surge of guitar fuelled wall of noise bands on the scene, one of whom, Chapterhouse, released a track entitled Breather. It’s a piece that’s stuck with me ever since. Breather was drawn a little while after Eight...Category

It was the first piece that spoke directly to the idea of drawing glass, using translucent glazes, and layers of transparencies, that in some way capture the excitement of seeing a great piece of studio glass, or contemporary stained glass...Category
