Edoardo Montaina
Paolina Borghese - Original Photograph by Edoardo Montaina - 2014

2014

About the Item

Paolina Borghese # 2 is the title of the photograph taken by the Italian artist Edoardo Montaina in 2014 and is part of the portfolio dedicated to and inspired by the prestigious collection of statues held at the Borghese Gallery in Rome. Fine-art print on Canson Baryta Photographique paper. Signed, numbered and titled in black ink on the center of the paper. In excellent conditions. From an edition of 9 specimens and 2 artist proofs. With this splendid shot, the artist shows how even photographing an artwork is in itself an autonomous artistic gesture, reinterpreting in a personal way the Neoclassical masterpiece by Antonio Canova. The seductive power of the statue, that is normally combined with the harmony of forms and the aulic balance of the pose, is overturned and enhanced by a new use of color, decisive and casual by Montaina. The artist dresses her Pauline Borghese, lifeless and austere, with an impalpable mantle of lights and bright colors. The volumes of the statue are thus crushed into a two-dimensionality that enhances the image that has become a Pop-icon.
