About the Item
A feminine figure casts a shadow on top of a stack of torn photographs. Her side-profile silhouette exudes strength, with her hands on her hips and head held high, through the sharp angles of her elbows and chin. Layered beneath the woman's silhouette is a faded image of another feminine body. This woman lies on her back, hugging her knees to her chest. Her facial features are hidden while the curves of her chest and bent knees soften her bodily outline. The layered composition emphasizes the juxtaposition between the depicted feminine bodies, revealing an intimate and vulnerable moment behind a sharp facade.
The work is handprinted by the artist on archival paper and is signed and numbered on the back. Hadley's "The Depths" is a 13 x 21 inch archival pigment print and is part of her "Story Lines" series.
In "Story Lines," Hadley creates surreal intimate cinematic narratives which blur the lines between reality and fiction. Inspired by Italian Neorealism and French New Wave cinema, she focuses on the tension between exterior beauty and internal psychological complexity. In this series, she reassembles and reorganizes her own photographs to construct ethereal narratives which speak to the dreams of generations of women whose voices were sidelined. Using the visual rhythms of the natural world, architecture and shadow to illuminate the drama, the images transform into poetic stories, enriched by the use of bold black and white imagery; the soft transparency of morning light bathing the streets or streaming through the misty landscape envelops figures in solitary contemplation and adds weight to the moment.
