The Kiss is an exhibition mapping a system uniting two bodies. It is a gesture, magnified by the use of sound, emerging from the action of kissing and intensified by the working presence of the performer’s body.
Throughout the space each element is weaved by simple associations between body (present and absent), sound, and various materials which are all used to reveal the nature of this binding gesture: kissing. The series does not display one privileged moment of the kiss – rather, it dislocates it through its many representations, underlining in this way an aural intensity which catalyses the possibility of an image of kissing within each spectator.
The series could be also perceived as a microscope slide where some of the components of kissing are exalted and isolated in order to better understand them. It is not a rendering, it is not a choreographed sequence, it doesn’t function within linear time. But it proves the force contained in a simple gesture (kissing) giving it simultaneously a voice and an expanded corporeality.

María José Arjona (b.1973 in Santa Fe de Bogotá, Colombia) lives and works in her native Bogota.
The Kiss was a self-taken photograph and was part of her solo exhibition in New York at the Art Space Location One, in 2012. The Kiss maps a system uniting two bodies. It is a gesture magnified by the use of sound emerging from the action of kissing and intensified by the working presence of the performer’s body.
“The Kiss” (is a long durational performance), a breathing system where the performer’s body becomes the intersection enabling the entire organism to work, reveals the intricate rhythm between lungs, fluids, and muscles while kissing. The body is the kiss: the plane of action created by it. This intersecting plane finds its translation into sound via the repetitive action of inflating and deflating two huge latex balloons."
Maria José Arjona is a performance artist focused on affirming the body through long durational exercises addressing process, time, memory and power. Her performances have been exhibited in museums and galleries in South America, Europe, China and the United States and have been reviewed by Art Nexus, Arte Al Dia, The New York Times, The Guardian (UK), Whitewall Magazine, The Miami Herald, El Nuevo Herald and many others. She participated as a re-performer at Marina Abramovic’s retrospective at The Museum Of Modern Art in New York and started touring with her own work at The Madre Museum in Naples (Italy) as part of the program “Corpus, Arte In Azione”. The itineration of this project includes locations in Bologna (Italy), Bergen and Oslo (Norway), New York (US), Vienna (Austria) and will end in 2010 in Colombia as part of the National Salon sponsored by the Ministry of Culture of Colombia.
Arjona had a solo exhibition in 2018 at the Museum of Modern Art in Bogota.

Maria José Arjona
Maria José Arjona was born in Bogota, Colombia, in 1973. Currently living and working between New York and Bogota, Arjona has developed a career fully focused on performance with an emphasis on long durational practices to address process, memory and power. From 2008–10, Arjona started to introduce the idea of a cycle as an archive of gestures, where to process different states of the body within political and social structures of power. Arjona’s work has been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions in museums and galleries throughout Europe, South America, Asia and the US. Her pieces have been reviewed in publications such as Art In America, The New York Times, The Guardian (UK), Whitewall Magazine, Art Nexus International, Arte Al Dia, The Miami Herald, El Nuevo Herald, Mag Magazine, Wynwood Magazine, El Tiempo, El Espectador, Corriere Della Sera, Revista Arcadia, Revista Diners and many others. Arjona participated as a re-performer of the iconic pieces of Marina Abramovic at her retrospective “THE ARTIST IS PRESENT” in MOMA, New York, in 2010 and was also involved in the workshop “Cleaning The House” given by Abramovic herself.
