About the Item

Engraving by Frederick Stacpoole after a 1867 painting by Briton Riviere, this work depicts a melancholy wintry scene of a dead lamb lying in the snow; a singing robin perched on a nearby branch is a hopeful sign of spring to come. Published by the Fine Art Society, London, April 1877. Frederick Stacpoole (1813-1907) was an English engraver who reproduced popular paintings of the Victorian period. Many of his engravings were after the works by Briton Riviere (1840-1920), a British artist who specialized on painting animals. . His knowledge of animals' anatomy was garnered through frequent visits to the London Zoo as well as through the study of specimens in dissecting rooms of the Zoological Gardens.
