About the Item

David Low (1786-1859) The Breeds of the Domestic Animals of the British Isles William Nicholson, RSA, Illustrator Brown, Green, & Longman’s, Publisher London, 1842 Lithographs with Original Hand-Color Page Size, 12.5 x 17 “Professor Low is the author of…a most extensive and magnificent work on the breeds of the domestic animals of the British Isles, which no agricultural society should be without. It is too expensive for private purchasers in general.” The New Zealand Journal, Vol. III; Fleet Street, London, 1842. As a professor of agriculture at Edinburg University, Low created this comprehensive work on animals familiar to the English countryside. The science of selective breeding lent itself to acquiring knowledge of the principles and practice of breeding, the properties of external form, as well as the natural and economic history of the species. To this end, Low published a pioneering reference work. Useful for breeders and general farmers alike, it highlighted the specifics of environment to the improved productivity of species breeding. The Breeds of the Domestic Animals of the British Isles sets magnificent examples of prize winning horses, cattle, pigs and sheep in their natural stance against beautiful landscape backgrounds. Transposed as illustrations by William Nicholson, RSA, the original paintings are by William Shiels, RSA, who was commissioned to create a series of paintings of existing British domestic farm animals of significant economic interest. Faithfully accurate as opposed to idealized, many animals are show with their young, some in the act of nursing. Of note is the distressing fact that several species are now extinct. Low’s text was the perfect compliment to complete this landmark work. Reference: Catalogue of the Library of the Zoological Society of London, London, 1847. A lithographer and map engraver, Bien arrived in the United States in 1849. Born in Naumburg, Germany, he was schooled at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kassel and at the Stadel Art Institute in Frankfurt am Main. He participated in the political upheavals of 1848 and was forced to leave his country after the movement was crushed becoming one of the many talented German "forty-eighters" to begin life anew in America. From a tiny print shop in New York City, Bien built a hugely successful business. He received numerous awards for the maps he engraved for the Pacific Railroad surveys, for several decennial census reports and for many US Geological Survey atlases and military field maps. He was also the first president of the National Lithographers' Association. Geological atlases were elemental in the development of states in both population and commerce. Here is where Bien shines with comprehensive understanding of science and his unparelled technique in printing. Among the most collectible of historic maps, these surveys provided landmark research in building a nation. Bien's second magnum opus was his chromolithographic edition of John James Audubon's The Birds of America. Through the new medium of chromolithography Bien was commissioned both to reproduce the quality of Havell's aquatints and to capture the subtlety of Audubon's colors. The ambitious project was never completed. Some historians blame the Civil War while other suggest financial cheating, but probably it was the death of Audubon that terminated Bien's work. For more than forty years following the Audubon folio...

FLORA’S FEAST A Masque of Flowers Walter Crane, Illustrator Cassell & Co., Publisher Color Lithograph London, 1889 Born in Liverpool, 15 August 1845, Walter Crane first studied art in his father Thomas’ studio. After both moving to London and losing his father, Crane obtained an apprenticeship as William Linton’s engraving shop. This position exposed the young Crane to political reform which would become a major influence on his future work. As in illustrator, Crane became part of an influential group of political and religious radical movements. A supporter of the Liberal Party, Crane was outspoken in his support of the Communard’s attempt to overthrow the French government in 1871. It is seemingly ironic that at this time that Crane’s reputation as an illustrator of children’s books began to blossom. Within a decade Crane would join his life-long friend William Morris’s Arts and Crafts...

Balmoral by His Majesty King Charles III (formerly known as HRH Prince Charles, The Prince of Wales) - Hand Signed Limited Edition Lithograph. Belgravia Gallery has been honoured to be associated with the artworks of HRH The Prince of Wales for over 25 years. Anna Hunter, gallery owner, wrote a handwritten letter to the Prince asking him if he would consider making signed lithographs from his beautiful watercolours which could be sold in aid of his charities. The gallery subsequently worked with the Prince for over 10 years publishing some 18 different editions and raising over £4million for the Prince’s Charitable Foundation. Lithographs were made from the Prince’s original watercolours under the guidance of Stanley Jones – a celebrated printmaker who had previously worked with Henry Moore for 30 years, and with Elizabeth Frink, David Hockney and others. Each one is hand-signed. “…One thing I have discovered in the course of my painting efforts is that Balmoral Castle...
