Joana Vasconcelos’ creative process is based on the appropriation and at the same time decontextualization of pre-existent objects and everyday realities in combination with the materialization of concepts that challenge the pre-arranged routines of the quotidian affinities.
"I like to create a space for discovery, a first moment where you capture what is obvious in the piece, where you can consume it in the first instant. But as you come closer, you discover there’s more to it and you start to deconstruct it." — Joana Vasconcelos
For the 55th Venice Biennale Joana Vasconcelos created a floating pavilion in the form of a typical Lisbon ferry boat. The work's title was Trafari Praia, it addressed the historical relationship between Portugal and Italy, which evolved through trade, diplomacy, and art. The exterior of the boat was covered with panels of tin-glazed, blue and white, hand painted ceramic tiles, called ‘azulejos’, which depicted a contemporary view of Lisbon’s skyline. The work takes its inspiration from another large-scale panel of azulejos, ‘The Great Panorama of Lisbon’, which depicts the city before the legendary earthquake of 1755 and is a quintessential expression of the golden age, when the baroque-style azulejos were produced in Portugal. This edition is a cutout of this beautiful scene which depicts the Tower of Belém and parts of the historical city.
“They are blue and white tiles that make up a drawing of the city today. There’s an old factory that still produces them the same way it did before, hand-painted, very traditional. I like their texture and tactile quality.„
—Joana Vasconcelos
JOANA VASCONCELOS
Joana Vasconcelos (born 1971, Paris) is a Portugeese artist whose main interest lies in reviving the surrealistic ready-made, mixing it with a certain sense of Noveau Réalisme and Pop, she often starts out from ingenious operations of displacement.
The Portuguese artist Joana Vasconcelos was born in Paris in 1971. As an artist Vasconcelos is interested in reviving the surrealistic ready-made, mixing it with a certain sense of Noveau Réalisme and Pop, she often starts out from ingenious operations of displacement. This can be seen in her site-specific art shows which are artistic interventions over pre-existent areas.
“I am inspired by everyday life and my perspective is led by a critical observation of the world around me. My creative process is based upon the appropriation, contextualization, and subversion of pre-existent objects and everyday realities.” —Joana Vasconcelos
Joana Vasconcelos places her works in dialog and confrontation with different spaces, decorations, themes, and histories. In her art, Vasconcelos appropriates, decontextualizes, and subverts pre-existent objects and everyday realities to challenge the prearranged routines of daily life. Her work engages in an investigation of gender, class, and national identities through the media of sculpture, installations, assemblages, video, and photography. This way of conceiving art becomes particularly clear in her show in the gardens and the inside of the chateau of Versailles in 2012 and in her project for the 55th Venice Biennale (2013), which determined the affirmation of her career within the international art circuit

- An Organised Whole - Contemporary art, 21st Century, Landscape, ContemporaryBy Tacita DeanLocated in Zug, CHTacita Dean An Organised Whole 2021 Screenprint Edition of 125 60 × 76 cm (23.62 × 29.92 in) Signed, numbered and dated In mint condition Tacita Dean, along with seven other leading international artists, were asked to create a print to celebrate Tate Modern’s 21st anniversary. Tacita Dean works in a large number of techniques in media ranging from painting to photography and film, frequently combining more than one of them. She addresses issues relating to the passage of time, exploring what we remember and how we remember it. Often her art revolves around decay and loss as triggers of memories. For her Tate Modern 21 Years print Tacita Dean compounds the traditional ideas of landscape, and still life in a single collaged image. The background is from Tacita's extensive vintage postcard collected by the artist in her visits to European flea markets, while the black and white object is from her Father’s collection of flints. The foregrounding of the flint changes its scale, suggesting something more monumental than a simple flint, and having too the characteristics of a Henry Moore public sculpture. "My relationship to film begins at the that moment of shooting, and ends in the moment of projection. Along the way there are several stages of magical transformation that imbue the work with varying layers of intensity." —Tacita Dean TACITA DEAN Tacita Dean is a dedicated conceptual artist working primarily in film. Her eloquent 16 and 35mm analogue films are carried by a sense of history, time and place, and a fascination with the unique qualities of film itself. She was 17 years old and she found an old wind-up Standard-8 camera in his study. Being clockwork, ‘it didn’t need a battery, so I put a film in that’. And away she went. Influenced by a range of artists and writers, including Marcel Broodthaers...Category
