Gianfranco Ferroni
In the Kitchen - Lithograph by Gianfranco Ferroni - 1973

1973

About the Item

In the Kitchen is an original contemporary artwork realized by the Italian artist Gianfranco Ferroni (Livorno, 1927 - Bergamo, 2001) in 1973. Original Eight colors Lithograph on paper. 330 x 358 mm. Excellent conditions. In the Kitchen is an original Lithograph realized by Ferroni in the Seventies, in the first period of his career. The work depicts an interior scene with several objects. A chair on the left side and a bottle in the center of the composition create a sense of movement. This work has been realized by the Italian artist Gianfranco Ferroni (Livorno, 1927 - Bergamo, 2001). During the War he moved to Tradate near Varese, where, in the first post-war period, Ferroni lived a troubled period of great solitude that later also marked its production in the early 1960s. In 1946, despite the opposition of the parents, he began attending the Brera Academy of Fine Arts, where he had the opportunity to meet the art critic Franco Passoni and artists such as Dova, Crippa and Meloni. In Milan Ferroni begins to attend a group of young authors who will be the spokespersons of the movement of existential realism for a few years. After the solo show held at the Schettini Gallery in Milan, Bergamini Gallery represented his work between 1956 and 1960. The first etching, Periferia, of which there is only one example, dates back to 1957; it is concentrated on the suburbs of Milan. From this moment on, throughout his life, the chalcographic activity will become fundamental in his experience. In 1958. he participated in the Venice Biennale. That year was for him a year of reflection about the fate of his work. After the last exhibition at the Bergamini Gallery, in 1960 and his presence at the Tokyo Biennale in 1964 and at the 1965 Rome Quadriennale, Ferroni returned to exhibit at the 1968 Venice Biennale where he was assigned a personal room. Once the space has been set up, however, he decides - adhering to the youth riots and protests - to exhibit the paintings facing the wall. From 1968 to 1972 Ferroni lived in Viareggio, in an isolation that heralds another change in his poetics and a new stage of his painting, increasingly focused on the physical and psychological interior of the studio. After 1975 there are some important exhibition events in Ferroni's career, that presents his works in Italy and abroad, garnering great interest from critics and the public. The beginnings of the Eighties are immediately marked, in 1980, by a great anthology in Naples that traces his entire activity from 1958. In the Nineties, every labor suddenly seems to calm down; the objects, constantly protagonists, now float in an aura of magic and suspension. In 2002, a year after his death, the catalog raisonné of the engraved works was published and in 2006, the catalog raisonné of lithographs. In 2007, two anthological exhibitions were inaugurated at Palazzo Reale in Milan and at Palazzo della Ragione in Bergamo.

He was already drawing when at the age of ten he moved with his family from the Bakon Hill region to the considerably more cosmopolitan Budapest. Recognizing the looming threat of Hitler and the pending Nazi invasion of Hungary, in 1940, at the age of seventeen, the young artist made his way to Palestine aboard the Sakaria, an old ship heavily crowded with 2,300 other refugees. Before reaching the shores of Palestine, then under the British Mandate, the British Navy intercepted the ship and declared Stern and all those aboard illegal immigrants. Stern was sent to a prison camp where he remained incarcerated by the British for six months. In 1943, having spent a few years doing agricultural work, Stern was encouraged by close friends who recognized his artistic talent to enroll in the prestigious Bezalel School of the Arts in Jerusalem. An outstanding student, he eventually became a highly respected teacher of Graphic Arts at Bezalel. Stern is recognized in Israel as having been one of the country's premier artists. His drawings are exhibited and appear in many publications and museums worldwide. Stern was the recipient of numerous awards including the Jerusalem Medal as well as both the UNESCO and Herzl Prize. Hans Schleger 'Zero' (1898-1976) London Transport Coach Stop Poster Screenprint poster c. 1970 16x17.8 cm Printed for London Transport These posters were designed to be used as temporary stops when the usual stop required amendment for instance owing to road works or similar events. Printed on paper they were designed to be posted up at the alternative site, possibly over a different sort of stop (bus stop, coach stop, request stop, etc.). Working with Edward Johnson's special typeface created for London Transport, Hans Schleger - or Zero as he signed himself - adopted the famous roundel used by London Underground for use at Bus Stops. Born in Germany, Schleger was an influential graphic designer. After serving during the First World War, he studied at the Berlin Kunstgewerbeschule, being taught by Emil Orlik. The same year Walter Gropius founded the Bauhaus at Weimar and Schleger learned the same principles of breaking down the barriers between architecture, design, fine art and craft. A firm believer in the Bauhaus principles of simplicity in design and reduction to essentials, these may be seen in the clean lines of the roundel. In 1924 he moved to New York, applying Modernism to American advertising, and then returned to Berlin in 1929 working for the British advertising agency Crawfords, where he met Edward McKnight Kauffer who introduced him to Jack Beddington the head of advertising at Shell Mex...
