COLMAR is an original wood engraving by the American artist Bernard Brussel-Smith, hand printed in yellow, light blue and black ink. COLMAR depicts a quaint French village scene with medieval half-timbered houses, canal, and local folks going about their daily activities. COLMAR is a charming rendition of this fairy tale city in Alsace Lorraine France, meticulously engraved by the master woodcut artist - Bernard Brussel-Smith. About Colmar, France: Colmar is located in eastern France, not far from the border with Germany. The Alsace has changed hands several times between France and Germany and the architecture and the food reflect that. Alsatian food is a wonderful blend of German and French cuisine. Colmar is one of over seventy towns located on the Alsatian Wine Route. It is also called the “capital of Alsatian wine.” Print size - 7.25 x 5.5 inches, image size 7 x 5 inches, unframed, pencil signed and titled by Bernard Brussel-Smith Bernard Brussel-Smith (1914-1989) was a well-known 20th Century artist and illustrator, specializing in the medium of wood engraving. He was born, raised, and lived most of his life in New York City, a constant source of imagery for the artist from Depression-era 40's, and the post-war 50s until his death. He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Philadelphia, and the New School for Social Research, New York and later taught art at the Brooklyn Museum, Cooper Union, City College, and the National Academy. Brussel-Smith was elected an Associate Member of the National Academy in 1952, and a full Member in 1973. His work is included in various public collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Philadelphia Museum of Art, New York Public Library, and Carnegie Institute.
