Frank H Mason RBA RI RSMA (1875-1965) Holland via Harwich - Flushing by Day - The Hook at Night Original Vintage Poster for LNER 98.5x61cm 1932 Mason was an artist best known for his maritime paintings, and the art deco travel and railway posters he designed. A 'Northern Impressionist' he was a member of the Staithes Art Club. This poster is an excellent example of his work, combining his love of maritime scenes with his LNER work. The port of Hook of Holland, by night, is rendered in glorious inky blue-black colours. Born in Hartlepool Mason was a naval cadet 1880-1882 in Birkenhead and then trained as a marine engineer with Parsons working for them in Scarborough where he settled in 1894. Scarborough had a strong artistic community and Mason studied at Scarborough School of Art and joined the arts community. By 1898 he gave up on marine engineering and became a full-time artist, and a founder-member of the Staithes Art Club in 1901. During the First World War he was appointed lieutenant in the RNVR as a war artist, commanding a Motor Launch. The Imperial War Museum has 56 of his paintings from this period. Following the war he created poster artwork for, amongst others, the railway companies LNER, LMS, GWR, GNR, NER, and the Underground Group and also for ocean liner companies. From 1902 he exhibited at the Royal Academy. He featured in the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics in the painting event in the art competition. In 1973 the National Maritime Museum held an exhibition of his work.
