James Tissot, in full James-Joseph-Jacques Tissot, (born Oct. 15, 1836, Nantes, France—died Aug. 8, 1902, Buillon Abbey, near Besançon), was a French painter, engraver, and enameler noted for his portraits of late Victorian society. After receiving a religious education, Tissot went to Paris at age 19 to study art. He fought in the Franco-German War (1870–71), later associating himself with the Paris Commune In 1885, after a mystical experience, he determined to illustrate a life of Christ. Tissot returned to Paris. He struggled for a time to regain his former popularity but was not entirely successful. He took a number of trips to the Holy Land and produced some 350 watercolours of New Testament subjects, which were published in two volumes.

James Tissot
James Jacques Joseph Tissot (October 15, 1836 - August 8, 1902) was a French painter. Tissot was born at Nantes. He studied at the Êcole des Beaux-Arts in Paris under Ingres, Flandrin and Lamothe, and exhibited in the Paris Salon for the first time at the age of twenty-three. In 1855 Tissot moved to Paris where he studied under Jules-Élie Delaunay, Louis Lamothe and Hippolyte Flandrin. Lamothe, who had been a pupil of Ingres, introduced him to Edgar Degas. The two men became close friends. Another friendship formed at this time was with James McNeill Whistler. Two portraits, including one of Tissot's mother, were among the artist's first exhibits at the Paris Salon in 1859. In 1861 he showed The Meeting of Faust and Marguerite, which was purchased by the state for the Luxembourg Gallery. His first characteristic period made him a painter of the charms of women. Demi-mondaine would be more accurate as a description of the series of studies that he called La Femme à Paris. Tissot fought in the Franco-Prussian War, and, falling under suspicion as a Communard, left Paris for London. Here he studied etching with Sir Seymour Haden, drew caricatures for Vanity Fair, and painted portraits as well as genre subjects. Sometime in the 1870s Tissot met a divorcée, Mrs. Kathleen Newton, who became his muse and the model for many of his paintings.

- Bust of Nero - Original Etching by P. Fontana After B. Nocchi - 1821By Pietro FontanaLocated in Roma, IT“Busto di Nerone” (Bust of Nerone) is a beautiful black and white burin and etching on paper, realized by the Italian artist Pietro Fontana, after Bernardino Nocchi as the inscriptions on plates on lower margins report “Bernardino Nocchi delineò./ Pietro Fontana incise Roma”. This original print is numbered on plate in Roman numerals on higher margin: “Tom II. /Tav. Gherardo De Rossi e da Stefano Piale sotto la guida di Vincenzo Feoli", by Ennio Quirino Visconti, published by Stamperia de Romanis in Rome, 1821. This old master’s original prints shows a precious piece of the Borghese's collection, the marble bust of the Roma Emperor, Nerone, realized with neoclassical style and a wise touch In excellent conditions with some light signs of the time, with some sporadic minor stains along the margins above all on the lower, and a usual yellowing of the paper on the lower margin, this wonderful burin has preserved still today his fresh impression. Illustrazioni de' Monumenti scelti Borghesiani This collection in two volumes is a beautifully detailed catalog of classical sculptures collected by Prince Borghese (1730-1800) in his Villa on the Pincio. Ennio Quirino Visconti (1751 - 1818) wrote the texts that accompany the large branches depicting. To these writings, which were available by the son of the illustrious archaeologist, the publishers added only a few illustrations relating to some minor monument of which copper had already been engraved. - Dorian Gray at Opium Den from "The Picture of Dorian Gray" surreal portraitBy Jim DineLocated in New York, NYThis surreal etching portrait of Dorian Gray by Jim Dine in blue ink features the literary protagonist dressed in a white suit. His face is obscured by a mass of hair, tangles of which seem to grow from the sleeves, pant legs, and from beneath the jacket. Dine's notes are written on the image: at his feet reading "WHITE BOOTS" and "White Vinyl Suit" alongside the jacket. On the left edge of the image handwritten text reads "DORIAN GRAY AT OPIUM DEN". In Oscar Wilde's novel Dorian Gray keeps opium in an ornate box in his home, and frequents sites of consumption on the East side of London: “There were opium dens where one could buy oblivion, dens of horror where the memory of old sins could be destroyed by the madness of sins that were new”. An opium den is where Sybil's brother James discovers Dorian. The brother attempts to capture the man he believes is responsible for the death of his sister. Dorian flees to his home, ultimately slashing the portrait that has kept him young for so long. Etching by Jim Dine from one of his most important artist’s books – completely designed and illustrated by Dine. Study for the Rings on Dorian Gray’s Hand from “The Picture of Dorian Gray...Category
