Pablo Picasso
Jacqueline au Bandeau de Face (Grande Tête de Femme)

1962

About the Item

Pablo Picasso Jacqueline au Bandeau de Face (Grande Tête de Femme), 1962 is a bright and unique depiction of Pablo Picasso’s last and final muse, Jacqueline Roque. Though she never sat and posed for him, she occupied his mind so intensely that her image always appeared when he began to paint women. In the traditional cubist style, the right side of her face is in profile facing towards the left, along with her eye and mouth turned the same direction. The left side of her visage faces straight forward, her eye wide, enlarged, and curious as her glassy gaze glances out towards the viewer. The background, a deep ochre, acts as the shading of her skin, lines that highlight the shadows across her face. Her hair cascades around her face, streaks of ochre and burnt sienna creating the illusion of strands of hair. This linocut is a mesmerizing experience into the allure of Jacqueline, and the profound inspiration and influence she held over Picasso. Created in 1962, this linoleum cut on Arches wove paper is hand-signed by Pablo Picasso (Malaga, 1881 - Mougins, 1973) in pencil in the lower right margin and is numbered from the edition of 50 in the lower left margin. By Pierre-Auguste Renoir

An intimate portrait of his second son, Jean Renoir (1894 – 1979), evokes a childlike sentiment and love that Renoir had for his children. Most likely no more than age 3, Jean is shown here with a cookie, beneath a frilly bonnet characteristic of late 19th century French society. His pink, rosy cheeks are defined with rich, glowing hues that contrast from the pale yellow and grey background in which he rests. Jean was also featured in a family portrait of the Renoirs, titled La Famille de l’Artiste (1896). Created in 1899, this Color Lithograph on Cream Laid Paper is from the edition of 100, from the unpublishedL’Album d’estampes originales de la Galerie Vollard; printed by Auguste Clot, Paris.
