Cheryl Wilson SmithPromises and Lies: Everything will be O.K. - white, metal, glass wall sculpture2023

About the Item
This distinctive wall sculpture was created by Cheryl Wilson Smith. The artist has assembled delicate layers of winter white glass frit (ground glass) in a dynamic pattern. Each stacked square of glass in this composition is approximately 4.5 x 4.5 x 3 inches and mounted on a black metal nail reminiscent of the old system of collecting notes or payment chits. The elements are orderly and as the lines progress down the elements succumb to 'gravity', giving way, as the sculpture movements elongate and provide a sense of liveliness. Sculpture is accompanied by simple installation instructions, each element is hung with a small cleat on the verso, to the wall.
Is this a clever social comment on the idea of keeping promises and telling lies? Or just the idea of keeping score.
“The layers of my work represent many things but one of them is the accumulation of memories that are passed down.” Cheryl Wilson Smith
She was the 2014 winner of the RBC Award for Glass through the Canadian Clay and Glass Gallery. Wilson Smith has received nine grants from the Ontario Arts Council and one from the Canada Council. Commissions include the Red Lake District Heritage Centre and Margaret Cochenor Memorial Hospital Donor Wall. She is the recipient of the prestigious Chalmers Fellowship from the Ontario Arts Council which allowed her to work in Scotland in 2023. Her work has been exhibited widely across Canada, the UK and the US.

Cheryl Wilson Smith
Cheryls’ art explores the passage of time and her sense of insignificance in the vast world around us. Living in the far north, on the granite and gold of the Canadian Shield and surrounded by Boreal Forest, she explores that which resonates within her soul. Drawing from her isolated life, residencies around the world and travels she has created a unique image . Like most Canadians she deals with landscape, but landscapes remembered across generations, those affecting us and those we impact. Cheryl is interested in remembrances that shape an individual’s art and design ideas. Her sculptures, the gossamer fine yet intrinsically strong structures become an active receptacle for interpretations of time and lasting memory. A place for quiet contemplation while exploring the tensions presented as we try to walk responsibly in this world and contemplate the extent to which we all alter the landscape, for better and worse. Wilson-Smith was the 2014 winner of the RBC Award for Glass through the Canadian Clay and Glass Gallery. The gallery published a description of her work: “Wilson’-Smith’s delicate and complex kiln-cast works are inspired by the Boreal Forest and rock shores of Red Lake where she lives. Created by translating drawings into countless individual layers of glass frit, her sculptures push the limits of glass while interpreting the northern Ontario light, landscape and wilderness.” Wilson-Smith has received nine grants from the Ontario Arts Council and one from the Canada Council. Commissions include the Red Lake District Heritage Centre, Margaret Cochenor Memorial Hospital Donor wall. Her work has been exhibited widely across Canada, in the UK and the US and is held in private and corporate collections.

- Probability Deep Blue 4 - elegant, curved, abstract, glass, wall sculptureBy John Paul RobinsonLocated in Bloomfield, ONJohn Paul Robinson creates original contemporary wall sculptures from coloured glass that are filled with light. This piece features elegant arched deep blue tubes of glass that are polished to a smooth finish and overlap one another to create a dynamic composition. The Canadian artist often explores themes related to how the world works. This is one of a series intended to represent the dual nature of light as both a particle and a wave. In physics, the wave nature of light is referred to as a "probability wave". “The thickness of the glass and curvature of the lens conspire to create their own optical effect. As your gaze moves across the piece it causes the small grains of coloured glass to shift just a bit. Starry Starry Night...Category

- Probability Deep Blue 2 - abstract, curved, glass, suspended wall sculptureBy John Paul RobinsonLocated in Bloomfield, ONCanadian artist John Paul Robinson has chosen a deep blue for this elegant glass wall sculpture. Six arched pieces of translucent glass are suspended by fine steel cables…each crisscrossing the other in a graceful composition. His glass work is inspired by nature’s elements—earth, wind, fire and water—all of which sustain life. For Robinson, this piece is symbolic of an iconic physics experiment that explored the dual nature of light. Light exhibits both particle and wave-like behaviour. “It’s important to me that my work be about something. So, I spend a lot of time reading, writing and basically researching ideas (often science-based) and issues that inform my work.” John Paul Robinson He was educated at the Georgian College of Arts and Technology and the Ontario College of Art where he later taught for several years. Robinson is a Fellow of The Creative Glass Center of America, recipient of the Joan Chalmers Glass Award and has twice received the Best Glass Award at the Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition. Robinson has had solo exhibitions in Montreal, Toronto, Palm Beach, Quebec City and Chicago. His works are in corporate, private and public collections throughout North America. Robinson is represented exclusively by Oeno Gallery.Category
