Delphine Grandvaux
"Flower on the Skin", Airy Tall Smooth Orange Metal Hand-Woven Pendant Sculpture

2023

About the Item

Titled "Flower on the Skin," this airy, tall sculpture was entirely hand-woven by artist Delphine Grandvaux using orange varnished iron wire. Its creation was inspired by the soundwave of the French expression "A fleur de peau" (Flower on the skin as the literal translation). By recording her voice, the artist obtained a visual representation of the soundwaves, which she then flawlessly transformed into this tangible piece through her meticulous metal wire weaving technique. For installation, this piece is to be suspended from the ceiling. Delphine Grandvaux is a French sculptor. Motivated by her desire to create light and airy artworks, she found her way to express creatively in a unique artistic approach, based on a similar technique of mesh from the metal wire as Ruth Asawa. In the woven works of Delphine Grandvaux, the metallic threads, sometimes associated with other light materials like wood, wool, etc., seem to be tamed by the power of her technique and by her freedom of imagination. They transform themselves under the hands of the artist into voluminous organic and dynamic forms, fine and refined, with fluid movements inside as well as outside the artwork. Playing with light and shadow, the transparent or semi-transparent forms created by the artist are truly evocative of poetry, delicacy, and elegance.
