About the Item
Ectoplasm II is a unique mirror-polished stainless steel sculpture and burnt oak wood base by contemporary artist Franck K, dimensions are 153 × 59 × 22 cm (60.2 × 23.2 × 8.7 in).
The sculpture is signed and comes with a certificate of authenticity.
The sculpture's title alludes to ectoplasm, the unidentified material that, according to parapsychology, gives spirits form and materializes when a medium is in a trance. The artist drew inspiration for these sculptures, specifically for the form and reflections on his other works, when creating them.
The stainless steel creations by Franck K interact with the surrounding light and reflections. The smooth, polished surface of these sculptures is distorted by lumps and hollows. Inspired by the waves and reflections on the sea's surface, they appear to be in constant motion.
Franck K's sculptures, which directly reference optical art, challenge our understanding of reality and stimulate viewers' imagination. As viewers move around the sculpture, they take on the role of "architects of their own work," influencing the shapes and colours that appear and disappear on it like ephemeral visions.
French contemporary sculptor Franck K works and lives in the south-west of France, close to Pau. His self-taught career started in the family business's boiler-making workshop, where he first learned how to work with materials as a child, especially metal. Its technical expertise provides a strong base upon which the calibre of its work is constructed. His artistic approach began when he created his first slate sculpture at the age of eight.

Franck K (1965) is a French contemporary sculptor who lives and works near Pau in south-west France. His self-taught career began in the boiler-making workshop of the family business where, as a child, he discovered working with materials, particularly metal. This technical knowledge is the solid foundation on which the quality of its work is built. At the age of eight he produced his first slate sculpture, which marked the beginning of his artistic approach. After graduating in boilermaking and then aeronautical and industrial design, Franck K began making objects for private individuals and architects. He also worked on the layout of bars, restaurants and shops. During his years in Toulouse, he built theatre and cinema sets and designed advertising and shop fittings. Franck K now devotes all his time to creating sculptures and designer furniture. His sculptural output takes a variety of forms: sculptures, wall sculptures and monumental installations – including in situ creations such as the four monumental sculptures installed in 2018 in the grounds of the Grand Hôtel des Bains, in Lavey-les-Bains, Switzerland. “I’m in favour of interactivity, so that people who come to see my sculptures or installations can make them their own, play with them, go on inner journeys, and ultimately be the authors and players of a work within a work.”
