Sam Chung
Cloud Moon Jar

2023

About the Item

Sam Chung Cloud Moon Jar, 2023 porcelain, overglaze, glaze 17" x 16.5" x 15.5" The moon jar is one of the most iconic ceramic forms in Korea – revered for its simple, austere beauty. It rose to prominence in the 17th-18th centuries during the Joseon Dynasty. As a Korean-American artist, Sam Chung has always admired the generosity that the form exudes and the wide-open space it offers for reflection. The Asian cloud motif that is integrated into Chung’s contemporary moon jars is a recurring theme and serves as a metaphor for living in between two cultures, a space that is constantly in flux. Sam Chung received his MFA from Arizona State University and a BA degree from St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota. He is a Professor of Ceramics at Arizona State University. He was awarded a U.S. Fulbright Scholar grant in South Korea for the 2021-22 academic year. Sam Chung has exhibited his work nationally and internationally and is in several permanent collections including the Everson Museum of Art (NY), Crocker Art Museum (CA), Icheon World Ceramic Center (Korea), Guldagergaard (Denmark), and the Weisman Art Museum (MN).

  • "Pantaloncini: Work No. 012 (Emma)" sculpture with pins
    By Angela Ellsworth
    Located in Phoenix, AZ
Angela Ellsworth Pantaloncini: Work No. 012 (Emma), 2017 47,160 pearl corsage pins, colored dress pins, fabric, steel 25”h x 18"w x 12”d Angela Ellsworth is an interdisciplinary artist who works in sculpture, drawing, installation, and performance. Her solo and collaborative work draws on a broad range of topics: illness (particularly her personal battle with cancer in her twenties), physical fitness, endurance, religious traditions (influenced by her family’s history and especially her great, great, grandfather, Lorenzo Snow, who was the fifth prophet and president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints), and social issues (such as queerness and non-heteronormative relationships in contemporary society as well as the tradition of polygamy with the early history of Mormonism.) Addressing the secret languages pulsing beneath officially-sanctioned accounts of history and religion, Ellsworth’s mysterious, entrancing objects and performances draw lines of communication between her Mormon ancestry and the work of 19th and 20th century female mystics, delving into an unspoken realm of gestural language, psychic connection, and sensuous geometry. In 2014, she founded the Museum of Walking, which is committed to conversations about land, action and site within the context of art. Ellsworth holds a MFA in painting and performance from Rutgers University and a BA in photography and painting from Hampshire College. Her work has been shown internationally including at The Getty Center (CA), Museum of Contemporary Art (Sydney, Australia), Zacheta National Gallery of Art (Warsaw, Poland), National Review of Live Art...

Perry Haas is a ceramic artist making functional pottery and focusing on wood-firing techniques. Drawing from a love for the wood-fired ceramic surface, Perry looks to anticipate the manner in which ash in the kiln will collect in different arrays across the convex and concave surfaces of his gestural clay forms. “I approach making with a childlike spirit of experimentation and exploration. My work stems from a love of the wood fired ceramic surface, particularly how it evokes many beautiful natural phenomena. Like imagining the way wind gathers and deposits leaves on a landscape according to changes in topography, I anticipate the manner in which ash will collect differently on the convex and concave surfaces of my gestural forms. These functional pots are developed as a place for this surface to exist and to be enjoyed as a part of our daily life.”—Haas "Mini Droplet Set", Contemporary, Ceramic, Sculpture, Wood Platform...
