About the Item
This sculpture is part of the sculptor’s most recent work, in which she uses paper porcelain (porcelain with 0.5% paper fibre added for greater flexibility) to create organic, dynamic and natural shapes. The artist tests the physical limits of the material (its collapse during firing) and plays with the balance between the full and empty spaces created by the shapes. She assembles different pieces to build her sculptures, but because of this process of collapsing, the final result after firing is always open to the unexpected. Colour is an important feature of this sculptural production, likely to elicit an emotional or psychological response from the observer. The linear patterns on the surface follow the viewer’s gaze along the curves, accentuating the soft, light, fluid look of the sculptures.

Simcha Even-Chen
The abstract porcelain sculptures by Israeli artist Simcha Even-Chen explore themes of tension and balance, the opposition between chance and planning, stability and movement. The harmony of her sculptures is achieved through the combination of shapes, colours and geometric patterns. Her creative process is guided by a scientific approach based on her experience as a biologist. Simcha Even-Chen’s work has been exhibited in museums, galleries, art centres and biennales around the world. Her sculptures have joined international museum collections specialising in ceramics, as well as private collections. “My sculptures belong to the abstract art, they are autonomous objects that stand independent of narrative. As autonomous sculptures they challenge the viewer to flow their imagination and interpretation.”
