Erté
Asian Princess

1991

About the Item

Erté created many costumes and artworks inspired by his travels and experiences with the countries and cultures of the Asian world. In addition, the French music halls which were an integral part of his creative life were equally enthralled with Asian themes and aesthetics. Many productions were based on the public’s fascination with this non-Western and unknown-to-them part of the world. Asian Princess is based on an image that Erté originally created as a geisha costume. He presents the dancing figure in a shimmering white gold kimono as the focal point, and the figure almost floats with an ethereal lightness. The costume is enhanced by the woman’s outstretched arms and flowing folds of fabric adorned with a delicate leaf pattern. The unfurled fan grasped in a finely shaped hand adds to the drama. Catalogue - Erté: The Last Works (Dutton, pgs. 186, 206). From the total edition of 462; numbered 162/375 (there were also 50 Roman and 37 AP). The bronze sculpture/casting medium and process is, and has always played, a fascinating part in the history of art, admired by civilization for thousands of years and continuously developed with modern technology. Erté sculpture exemplifies the timeless beauty of this intriguing art form and manifests the artist’s personal unique flair in every bronze creation.
