About the Item
The piece is based on Australian super-model Emma Champdaloup who really has those planar features, soaring cheekbones and intense gaze. I saw in the piece an archetypal female power, and created the dynamic twisting hair structures to give form to the energy I was seeking. Emma 2024 reflects my long-time focus to affirm and model people who are free and clear, unbowed, comfortable in their own skins. Sculpting the bust, bringing these beings to life in clay is a lot of fun. Yet this type of careful, skill-based realism can sometimes seem out of step with current artistic trends. Nonetheless, I’m convinced that the classical sculpted bust can still endure as a viable contemporary art form, which I aim to do by staying open to the new and unexpected and incorporating that in my process.

BIO My sculptural practice engages traditional sculptural forms to explore cultural questions that puzzle or intrigue me. I generally find myself introducing some contemporary material, found object or other element into classical figurative or representational contexts. In recent years my work has centered on the human head/bust. Prior to that I developed a large body of high-relief, wall-hung sculptures made by pressing objects into clay, thereby creating a mold, then pouring over it a single cast of hard plasters blended with powdered Carrara marble. Bob was born in Oakland, CA and lives and has his studio in Rye, NY. His work has been exhibited in solo shows in Santa Fe (Jane Sauer Gallery) and New York (Lower East Side-Dacia Gallery and Bushwick- Anthony Philip Fine Art) as well as group shows in Paris, Hong Kong, Italy and throughout the U.S. His sculptures are in permanent collections of the Burchfield-Penney Museum in Buffalo, NY and Museo Arte Contemporanea Sicilia in Italy. The work has been reviewed in numerous art publications including Hyperallergic and featured in the NY Times, Wall St Journal and other national media. Bob spent 8 years in formal study of sculpture, centering on his years at the Art Students League of New York.
