Glitch Bear (model)

2023

About the Item

Glitch Bear (model) is a preliminary model for a life size sculpture of a bear, that will appear distorted by a digital glitch, as if a corrupted digital image has willed itself into three dimensions. As viewers walk towards the sculpture, the form of the animal will become more garbled and difficult to perceive, working against viewer expectations. The works will humorously deny the viewer resolution, both physically and conceptually, while critiquing our cultural impulse to document every experience with nature through our camera phones. Presented in public settings, the distorted bear sculptures will act as selfie bait, a hook that will draw the viewer into deeper ideas surrounding their relationship to animals and the environment. As nature enthusiasts strive for the perfect picture, photographs of Glitch Bear will always read as distorted anomalies no matter how cutting edge the photographic equipment. The work will carry an unexpected quality about it as the situation suddenly shifts from normal to surreal, revealing the extraordinary possibilities in how humans relate to the natural world. Purposely diverse, his studio work straddles the line between high and low culture, acting as a catalyst for critical thought and addressing the failed promise of a modernist future predicated on boundless scientific advancement. Whether through craftsmanship, the creation of spectacle, or humor, the goal of his work is to provoke the viewer into questioning the dominate myth of progress ingrained in Western world views. Brandon Vickerd is a Hamilton-based artist and Professor of Sculpture at York University, where he also serves as Chair of the Department of Visual Arts and Art History. He received his BFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (1999) and his MFA from the University of Victoria (2001).
