Sable Antelope Bust - African Wildlife Sculpture - Limited Bronze Edition

2024

About the Item

‘Hippotragus Niger’ – Sable Antelope With their astonishing horns and painted faces, sable antelope are one of Africa’s most iconic species. Growing their horns over a lifetime, they can grow up to 1.6 metres in length. Each year they develop a new ring, so the sable’s horns can be used to determine age. Part of the hippotragini tribe of horse antelopes, in the Greek language hippos means horse and tragos means a he-goat. Niger is the Latin word for black or dark-coloured. So their scientific name translates as ‘black horse-like goat’ Sable can run at 57 km/h to escape their predators and have been known to be able to maintain this speed for more than 3 km Horns – the sable’s final form of defence. When attacked a sable will run but when cornered will fight back. However when competing for females and territory bulls will either posture and have also been seen to ‘fight’ by dropping to their knees to engage in lengthy horn wrestling battles Bronze Sable Bust, Limited edition of 12. Height 71 cm x width 47 cm incl. base. Bronze on Sandstone base It is hard to forget the first time you see the magnificent Sable antelope - the black shiny coat and those impressive and curved horns. Inspired by many years in the bush spent in close study of my favorite subject, my sculpture endeavours to pay tribute to Africa's rich wildlife heritage. Each piece is sculpted, cast using the lost wax method of bronze and then chased and finished individually by hand by myself. Made on order After receipt of your order the casting of your edition takes place in my 'Black Dog Foundry'. Shipping from South Africa is approx. 6 weeks after placement of order.
