Nicholas Crombach
End of the Chase (Dark Version) 1 of 6 - figurative, resin and wood sculpture

2022

About the Item

It is a powerful image—at once compelling and provocative—an old-fashioned rocking horse, collapsed. This is the work of Nicholas Crombach. The Kingston based artist creates sculptures from a variety of cast mediums including bronze and resin. This elegant, exquisitely detailed rocking horse is rendered in the likeness of horses from the Victorian era often tragically lost in dangerous fox hunts. Crombach’s thought-provoking work has long been focused on humans’ complex relationships with animals—a natural theme for the young boy who grew up on a dairy farm. This piece is made of resin, wood and synthetic hair. The colour palette is appropriately earthy and rich—dark gray, green, bronze and burgundy. ‘End of the Chase’ was part of a recent art exhibit called ‘Behind Elegantly Carved Wooden Doors’ which focused on… “…a history of hunting; its cultural significance and the dilemmas present within, including current day, and a history of vanishing craft traditions, employing the rich visual culture of the hunt to assemble a bricolage of works which revel in contradiction.” Nicholas Crombach Born in Toronto (1989) Crombach is a graduate of OCAD’s Sculpture and Installation program. He has received many grants and awards including the Abraham and Malka Green award, a BMO 1st Art Nomination as well as grants from Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation and the Ontario Arts Council. He was the 2016-17 artist in residence at The Florence Trust in London, UK and in 2022 at the Studios at MASS MoCA in the US. Crombach has completed many public art commissions and has exhibited widely in Canada, Spain, and England. His work is held in private, corporate and public collections including the Museu Europeu d'Art Modern in Barcelona and First Capital Realty in Toronto.

  • Arethusa immerses herself in the Alpheus river - figurative, bronze statuette
    By Richard Tosczak
    Located in Bloomfield, ON
This large bronze statuette of a reclining nude with legs outstretched, arms tucked in and straining to sit up was created rapidly in gestures that verge on abstraction. The modern and dynamic formalism that departs from realism allows the viewer to focus on emotive qualities of pure form. This is number 1 in an edition of 8. Tosczak is a Belgian-born, Edmonton-based figurative sculptor. He studied philosophy and modernist sculpture, working in steel, at the University of Alberta where a number of the professors had a strong affiliation with Sir Anthony Caro and Clement Greenberg. Richard pursued further artistic training in the Loire Valley with Martine Vaugel...

  • The Pleiades-Taygete 1/8 - emotive, nude, female, figurative, bronze statuette
    By Richard Tosczak
    Located in Bloomfield, ON
The elegant form of a nude female figure is captured in this sculpture by Canadian artist Richard Tosczak. This table-top piece is named after ‘Taygete’ one of the Pleiades--seven sister nature deities (nymphs) found in Greek mythology. She stands, head bowed, arms clasped around her neck as if in deep thought. Known for his beautiful figurative work, this piece retains the artist’s signature highly textured appearance and rich earthy patina. Tosczak’s pieces are first conceived on paper in quick pen and ink drawings. The spontaneity of this approach is evident in the almost abstract appearance of the sculpture. Edition one of eight. “What inspires/informs my work? In a word, observation. I notice things…a gesture…an accident.” Richard Tosczak Born in Belgium, Richard Tosczak studied philosophy and sculpture at the University of Alberta. At that time, Tosczak began working in steel and was influenced by a number of his professors who appreciated the work of a British abstract sculptor, Sir Anthony Caro considered one of the greatest sculptors of his generation. Further studies were pursued in France with another internationally acclaimed classic sculptor, Martine Vaugel...
