Unsigned from a sold out edition of unknown. Stamped with Nara copyright on box. Background: "When Yoshitomo Nara was still in high school, he was obsessed with Rock and Roll music. He especially enjoyed Punk music for its anti-establishment attitude and spirit of freedom. During the 1990s, he was frequently invited to produce album cover art for famous bands such as, R.E.M., The Star Club, and Shonen Knife. In 2005, he made the album cover for the Japanese Punk band Bloodthirsty Butchers. The title of the album was precisely Banging the Drum. Two years later, Yoshitomo Nara cast a female drummer as the main character in his work and painted the Banging the Drum solely as a stand-alone piece of art." (Source: Christies) More on Yoshitomo Nara: Influenced by elements of popular culture such as anime, manga, Walt Disney cartoons, and punk rock, Yoshitomo Nara creates paintings, sculptures, and drawings of adorable-yet-sinister childlike characters. Painted with simple bold lines, primary colors, and set against empty backgrounds, these small children and animals often share the canvas with text, knives, plants, and cardboard boxes, among other recurring elements. As one of the fathers and central figures of the Japanese neo-Pop movement, Nara’s work expresses the struggle to find an identity fractured by war, rapid modernization, and an omnipresent visual culture. KAWS:HOLIDAY SPACE (Silver), is a celebration of 20 years of the KAWS Companion. Using a sounding balloon, the KAWS:HOLIDAY SPACE was sent up 41.5km into the stratosphere before retuning to Earth. Reminiscent of KAWS’ MTV VMA Moonman trophy (2013), the sculpture features a derailed space suit complete with hoses, valves and more. A standout KAWS display piece constructed with a bright metallic mirrored feel as well as a significantly heavier body compared to the artist’s traditional vinyl figures. New/never displayed & accompanied by original packaging. Medium: Polyurethane Figure. Silver color way. Year: 2020. Dimensions: 11.5 inches in height. New in original packaging; excellent condition. From a sold out edition of unknown. Published by All Rights Reserved. Artist Statement: “So many projects have been cancelled this year. I wanted to create one that could be experienced safely from home,” says KAWS. “Because this year marks 20 years since I created COMPANION, I tried to find a way around all the restrictions and do something special. I felt so confined the past few months that creating a project like this has really given me a chance to escape.” KAWS is a fine artist, illustrator, painter, sculptor, product designer, and toymaker. His cartoonish style—including his best-known characters with X-ed out eyes—has its roots in his early career as a street artist, when he began replacing advertisements with his own, masterful acrylic paintings in the early 1990s.
