Adrien-Etienne Gaudez
Pair of Polychrome-Patinated and Gilt Bronze Orientalist Princess Busts

About the Item

Artist: Adrien-Etienne Gaudez (1845-1902) Origin: French Date: 19th century Dimension: 32 in(H) x 21 in(W); 29 1/2 in(H) x 22 in(W) Adrien-Etienne Gaudez entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in 1862 where he was a pupil of the noted sculptor François Jouffroy. He made his Salon debut two years later and continued to exhibit his work regularly in public exhibitions and in addition to numerous honors he won Gold Medals at the Exposition Universelle of 1889 and 1890. Gaudez's output was prolific and his sculptural oeuvre encompassed a wide range of subjects, though the artist is best known for his orientalist compositions. This bust displays all of the elements of finely-cast polychrome sculpture, a category which artists such as Charles-Henri-Joseph Cordier (d. 1905) pioneered in the 1860s with his ethnographic depictions in galvanoplastie of indigenous peoples from North Africa and Asia. Gaudez's use of red cold paint, mixed with gilt highlights throughout the figure's vest, belt, necklace and headdress enabled him to give a greater sense of depth and texture, much akin to his contemporaries.

    Located in New York, NY
Parcel gilt and patinated bronze figural statue of a Nubian Water carrier with a pitcher on her shoulder. The contrast between the deep bronze and bright gilding is incredibly striking. The woman drips in gold jewelry and drapery, wearing arm bangles, a large necklace and outrageous earrings. Beautifully casted, the piece's details are crisp and well defined, with beautiful even patinas and gilding. She stands atop an exquisitely carved, two toned, wooden base made of three sections. A fluted column with a small garland nestled within each flute makes up the main body, while a bellied band carved to mimic tufted cushions or upholstery is sandwiched between the column and a black hexagonal ped. Attributed to the Graux-Marly Foundry. Based at 8 rue du Parc-Royal in Paris in 1860, started by Jules Graux-Marly and continued by his sons into the later 19th Century. The firm exhibited at the 1878 Paris Exhibition and was well-respected for both their figurative sculptures and decorative ornaments. • 'Tortoise' Contemporary bronze animal sculpture of a tortoise, glossy finish
    By Tobias Martin
    Located in Shrewsbury, Shropshire
'Tortoise' by Tobias Martin is a Solid Bronze Animal Sculpture. Tobias Martin was born in 1972 in Wiltshire, 12 miles from Stonehenge. Influenced by his idyllic rural upbringing, and the forces of nature and magic that permeated his childhood surroundings, these works have something of the mystical about them. Each piece is approached with precise observation and an acute interest in the minutiae of the subject matter, manipulating the material with a delicacy and lightness of touch. Despite being realised in heavy materials such as bronze, the resulting piece achieves a sense of movement and character that conveys the essential spirit of the animal. Inspired by the work of Grinling Gibbons and Alfred...
