Questions About (after) Frederic Remington
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
Remington was interested in the Sholes and Glidden typewriter, which was the first commercially successful typewriter, and contracted with them to make Remington typewriters, which were the first to use the QWERTY layout. While this was a success, the company decided to sell its typewriter business to Standard Typewriter Manufacturing Company. That company continued to use the Remington name until it changed to Remington Rand after a merger. In 1955 Remington Rand was purchased by Sperry Corporation but continued to produce typewriters until the Sperry merger with Burroughs in 1986.
