WWII US Navy Military-Issue Kersey Wool Pea Coat - US 36-38 / Men's Small, 1940s

About the Item

Like its cousin the trench coat, the pea coat enjoys military origins but its style and practicality have made it a civilian wardrobe staple. Slimmer in cut than its modern counterparts, this WWII version is also made of rare 32 oz Kersey wool, the heaviest and most impenetrable to the elements, and features mid-brown corduroy lined pockets. US Navy issue pea coat featuring double breasted construction, 10 fouled anchor buttons and storm flap under collar. Corduroy-lined front slash pockets, plus interior right breast pocket and left change pocket; rear center vent. Fully lined in acetate; padded armscyes. Issued to “J B Hopkins.” fabric: Kersey wool, acetate noteworthy: dry clean only; very stiff fabric repairs: none condition: good with light interior wear at back of neck; original owner restitched button holes to prevent fraying, but repairs are invisible when coat is buttoned; some discrete moth depressions (not holes) throughout measurements: neckline circumference: 16” buttoned to throat collar: 4” at widest shoulders: 18 ¼” sleeve: 25” from shoulder, 18” from underarm sleeve circumference: 18” at upper arm, 12” at wrist chest: 40” waist: 38” length: 31 ½” from center neck, 27” from shoulder, 19” from underarm sweep: 45” vent: 8 ½” label: US Naval Clothing Factory tag has been removed; issue stamp reads “Hopkins, JB” size: no size tag present; comparable to modern men’s size 36-38R due to slim cut
