Couture MartinMargiela 1994 Artisanal Line0 UpcycledSocks Overdyed Pullover

About the Item

In 1994, Martin Margiela did something unprecedented with his contemporary luxury fashion brand Maison Martin Margiela, which was to debut a collection with no new designs but rather a new-for-its-time concept of upcycling his favorites from his own past collections. From that first non-seasonal collection, this blueish-grey knit v-neck pullover is an "Artisanal/Line 0" (couture) re-edition from "Collection Autumn Hiver 1992-1993" that was handmade by Maison Martin Margiela like the original sweater that had been assembled from deconstructed long hiking or ski socks. The one new element that united the 1994 Maison Martin Margiela retrospective collection--with some re-editions from multiple years and seasons among its first 10 runway shows--was that the different materials of all the new artisanal or ready-to-wear clothes were overdyed in grey. Thereafter, following 10 more seasonal fashion shows every five years, Margiela mounted another retrospective of his favorite pieces. The interior of our jumper features the iconic "ghost" blank label, with its angled stitches on four corners clearly visible from the upper back when worn. The other tags note Artisianal Line "0", size "S", "Made in Italy", and the collection season/year of the original sweater that was stencil-painted with black text on another ecru label. The latter two tags were removed by the sole owner due to bulk near the waist, but preserved exactly as they had been assembled with the country-origin label looped around the stenciled collection label. In imagery of that earlier Fall/Winter 1992 fashion show, the original Margiela sweater seems to have been worn under a transparent garment bag that acted as a dress-form overlay. The flattering short tight sweater has ribbed cuffs and waistband, which appear to have previously secured the socks above the calves when worn. The neckline is meticulously topstitched to secure the weave of the deconstructed socks, whose non-itchy yarn feels like a viscose and/or merino-wool blend given its softness without visible sheep-hairs. The sleeves, which start at the v-neckline, are angled so that darts for the anticipated female buyer were not necessary.

  • MartinMargiela 1990s MissDeannaKnit GoldLurexThreaded FauxDipDyed Ombre Pullover
    By Maison Martin Margiela
    Located in Chicago, IL
When Belgian former fashion designer Martin Margiela debuted gold Lurex knits while French Hermes womenswear artistic director, simultaneously in Fall 1999, he introduced at his eponymous Paris-based Maison Martin Margiela a collection featuring 1970s-inspired Lurex-accented sweaters, along with oversized loose clothes intended for either women or men. Including a distinct black-printed white-folded tag stitched into a seam by Italian experimental knitter Miss Deanna, who created many memorable knits under Margiela's artistic direction, this Margiela sparkly finely-knit viscose-and-Lurex-blend long-sleeve pullover is a minimalist unisex design with narrow ribbed trim at the crewneck, wrists and hem. Its "Made In Italy" size 44 with a 15.5-inch shoulderline is without darts and drapes like a one-size-fits-most stretch T-shirt. The lightweight sweater was knit from pale-gold, grey and blue yarns into an ombre pattern like a dip-dye technique associated with fabric. Yet the additional glittery orange-tone metallic thread (difficult to photograph due to reflections) interspersed throughout was clearly not dyed or printed. Conversely, Margiela's Fall 1999 Artisanale Line 0 collection that was produced instead by his Parisian team explored the textural effects of hand-painting fabrics, such as the unisex T-shirts that were striped or obscured with thick silver paint. Earlier in the 1990s, Margiela had reproduced some vintage...

  • MartinMargiela 1990 1stRetrospectiveCollection1994 Sheer Black Convertible Apron
    By Maison Martin Margiela
    Located in Chicago, IL
Dating this minimalist convertible transparent black chiffon rectangular garment by Belgian former fashion designer Martin Margiela to Spring 1994 among his many variations of the traditional waiter-style apron that he reworked with his eponymous Maison Martin Margiela since its first collection for Spring/Summer 1989, the iconic corner-stitched textural white-cotton brand label is stenciled with seemingly contradictory text referencing an earlier collection in Fall 1990. Instead of the blank label that had become internationally recognized among the fashion elite within the brand's initial five years--before the presence of any other tag printed with the designer name--this black print was added in this manner for only one collection during its founder's tenure. The distinct typography specified the collection season when the new Margiela design had debuted since he selected favorites to re-edition from his first 10 fashion shows. This season-less self-curated retrospective collection without any new designs was unprecedented in the ready-to-wear fashion industry, which sold only new clothes typically two to five times annually. In the early 1990s, this old-made-new-again collection was astonishing for a Paris-based high-end brand, for which any lack of fresh designs for Spring had otherwise been attributed to the loss of an artistic director or the outbreak of war. Nevertheless, there are subtle differences of color, material and draping possibilities that make our re-edition unique from the 1990 apron and from later "replicas", which was the term that Margiela printed on a different kind of label for his second self-curated retrospective in Spring 1999 following 10 more collections. Aside from the text-printed brand label with four characteristic hand-sewn corner stitches, the only other element that unified Margiela's first collection of favorites was that all the items were overdyed a darker color so that the clothes were various shades of grey, blue or black depending on the original color of the textile and how much dye the thread/yarn absorbed. The first Margiela apron...
