Amazing 19th century Japanese Edo period six panel folding byobu screen depicting Chinese children at play. The screen alludes to the 100 children theme. The paintings are set in a lacquer painted faded red frame with dramatic gold leaf borders. The characters have vibrant color pigments and intricate artwork. The paper has a lovely aged patina with old repairs, but full of character and charm. From an estate in Bel Air, CA.

They are dressed in plumed and tasseled hats, ornate jackets, baggy pants, and cloth slippers typical of T'ang period Chinese court dress.
