Large Blue Silk Brocade Framed Handcrafted Japanese Decorative Art
About the Item
Large Japanese contemporary framed three-dimensional decorative art piece in Japanese traditional silk and brocade in soft green, blue and purple on a deep gray background, recreating an 18th century "tagasode" woodblock print. A traditional Japanese handcrafted decorative art form using high quality silk and brocade fabrics, known as oshie (literally, “pressed pictures”) has been used to create this magnificent piece. Oshie resembles a carefully crafted jigsaw puzzle consisting of numerous pieces of kimono fabric padded with slightly varying thickness of cotton and painstakingly glued and ironed together to create an incredible three-dimensional picture. In the final process, the details are accentuated by painting and shading, and facial features are painted in miniature-like exactitude.
"Tagasode" is the way a genryoku kosode kimono is hung gracefully over a kimono rack. The kosode is considered the origin of modern kimono. According to the designer of this series, tagasode originated from the desire of ladies of the court to preserve their exquisite kimonos, and thus kimono designs showcasing the Four Seasons in Japan, its history and its customs have been passed down all the way to the present generation.
This series conveys the beauty and sensibility that the history of Japan reflects and at the same time enhance contemporary living spaces.

Six panels painted in ink on gold leaf and "gofun" on vegetable paper. The flowers are made with the "gofun" technique, natural or pigmented white oyster powder.
