Charles Catteau for Boch Freres Keramis, Set of 4 Faience salad Plates, Art Deco

About the Item

Four extremely rare faience salad plates are hand-painted on ecru background with Art Deco style orange and yellow flowers and green leaves. This design was widely used on various vases signed by Charles Catteau; there are multiple examples in Christie's auctions, such as The Collection of Melba Bucksbaum, 2018, and other auctions. Boch Freres Keramis was founded in 1841; Charles Catteau joined the company in 1906, and served for 42 years as an art director. He won international recognition for his Art Deco style designs, receiving a Grand Prix at International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts in 1925. The plates are signed on the bottoms with Keramis Made in Belgium marks (E-P14 mark at Liberty's) and indented factory marks. Keramis Art Deco period mark was registered in 1927. The plates are 8" in diameter and 11/16" high. The plates are in excellent vintage condition.

  • Haviland Limoges Hand Painted Art Deco Porcelain Plates Water Lilies
    By Haviland & Co.
    Located in Clifton Springs, NY
Set of 4 unique, antique plates was made by Haviland & Cie in Limoges, France. The plates were hand painted by a professional artist in a decorating studio with Art Deco motif of five water lilies on pale blue background. Calm blue and green colors are accentuated by bright yellow centers of the flowers and the gold rims. The advent of Arts and Craft Movement created the notion that the aesthetic quality of everyday utilitarian objects could be improved by merit of craftsmanship, and many painters and artists felt inspired to merge their activities into decorative arts, such as ceramics, decor objects, or dinnerware. Large number of wholesale and retail firms, such as Pickard, Stouffer, or Brauer studios, and many high-end department stores that carried factory decorated Limoges's porcelain, had their own china decorating departments and produced high quality hand painted porcelain. Undecorated Haviland china...
